Ronald Araujo’s Last-Gasp Winner Saves Barcelona Against Girona

Barcelona’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Girona on Saturday night owed everything to Ronald Araujo’s late heroics, as the Uruguayan defender turned emergency striker to snatch all three points in stoppage time.

The Catalans looked set for another disappointing evening after Girona cancelled out Pedri’s early opener. The youngster had finished neatly in the 13th minute after a clever one-two with Lamine Yamal, but Girona responded quickly through Axel Witsel’s acrobatic effort. Both teams went close several times, striking the woodwork in a thrilling end-to-end encounter that kept the crowd at Montjuïc on edge until the final whistle.

Coming off two straight defeats in different competitions, Hansi Flick’s side badly needed a result to steady their season. When chances dried up late on, Flick threw Araujo forward as an emergency centre-forward—a gamble that paid off spectacularly. The defender showed a striker’s instinct to pounce in the dying seconds, firing home the winner that sparked wild celebrations across the stands.

Araujo on his forward instincts

After the match, Araujo couldn’t hide his joy and revealed that playing as a forward wasn’t completely new territory for him. Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, he said:

“We knew we were coming off two tough defeats, but with hunger and hard work, we knew we could get the win today. After a win, everything changes and you work differently.”

Smiling as he recalled his late cameo up front, Araujo added:

“Everyone knows I used to play as a striker. I think if I played as a striker, I could score a lot more goals (laughs). When the coach asked me, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. When I got there to put on the shirt, I said, ‘If I go on, I’ll score,’ and everyone laughed afterwards when I did. I work to be able to play for the team, so I’m happy about that.”

A timely confidence boost for Barcelona

Araujo’s match-winning goal — his second in La Liga this season — could not have come at a better time. It restored belief in a Barcelona side that had appeared to lose momentum in recent weeks and provided Flick with an emotional lift ahead of next weekend’s crucial El Clásico clash at the Santiago Bernabéu.

With Real Madrid up next, the victory keeps Barça within striking distance of the top of the table and injects fresh energy into a squad still adapting to Flick’s methods. Araujo’s versatility and leadership continue to shine, whether he’s commanding the backline or stepping up as an unlikely hero in attack.
