Ronaldo the hero as Portugal made to sweat by Scotland in comeback win

Portugal faced a challenging match but ultimately secured their second consecutive victory in the UEFA Nations League (UNL) with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Scotland, a team that has yet to achieve a win on Portuguese soil (L7, D1).

On his 30th birthday, Bruno Fernandes marked another significant milestone by participating in his 600th career match and earning his 72nd international cap. The Scottish side began the match strongly in Lisbon, with Billy Gilmour and John McGinn effectively controlling the midfield.

Their promising start was further enhanced in the seventh minute when Kenny McLean delivered a cross that was expertly converted by Scott McTominay with a header, marking his 10th goal in just 13 appearances for his country.

Portugal responded positively, particularly on the wings, with Rafael Leao posing a significant threat to the Scottish defense, although he unfortunately struck his shot into the side netting. The AC Milan forward continued to be a key player for the hosts, first forcing a low save from Angus Gunn and then dribbling to the byline to set up Diogo Jota, whose attempt went over the bar.

Leao was instrumental in the Selecao's offensive efforts as they increased the pressure approaching halftime, but Andre Silva was unable to direct his header on target. Gunn was kept exceptionally busy as the Tartan Army aimed to maintain their lead into the break, denying Jota's efforts before Nuno Mendes narrowly missed the post with a powerful shot.

Martinez opted for a double substitution at the start of the second half, including the introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is now on the quest for his 1000th career goal after achieving his 900th in the previous match.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with Leao once again threatening down the left flank. This time, he found Fernandes at the edge of the box, and the birthday celebrant struck a first-time shot into the bottom corner.

Following the equalizer, the Portuguese intensified their efforts, particularly after the introduction of Diogo Dalot, which altered the dynamics of the match.

The Manchester United defender delivered a precise cross to Joao Felix, whose diving header was thwarted, while Cristiano Ronaldo was denied by the crossbar on two occasions within a minute.

Despite these near misses, the Portugal captain remained undeterred and, in the 88th minute, capitalized on a cross from Nuno Mendes to score, marking his 901st career goal.

After finally overcoming Gunn's resistance, Portugal managed to maintain their lead in the closing moments, securing the top position in Group 1 of the UNL League A.

While Steve Clarke can find some positives in Scotland's display, the consecutive late goals conceded may prompt a thorough review of the team's performance.
