Rookie Keyonte George lead Jazz to victory over Pelicans

The Utah Jazz secured a hard-fought 114-112 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, capping off a two-game series sweep in a high-octane clash at the edge of their seats.

The standout performance came from rookie Keyonte George, who soared to a season-best 19 points, steering the Jazz towards victory. Alongside George's stellar contribution, Jordan Clarkson was instrumental, notching up 16 points and a season-high 10 assists, while Walker Kessler made a significant impact off the bench with 14 points and eight rebounds. Simone Fontecchio also made his presence felt with a solid 14 points contribution.

The Jazz, now on a five-game winning streak against New Orleans, showcased their sharpshooting prowess by sinking 17 three-pointers, six of which came alive in a gripping fourth quarter. Their fluid ball movement was evident, tallying an impressive 31 assists on 37 made baskets.

Clarkson emphasized the team's strategy, highlighting the importance of ball circulation and collective play, stating, “Sometimes the play is just swinging it...when everybody’s touching the ball, it feels good.”

Despite New Orleans' commendable 50% shooting from the field, spearheaded by Zion Williamson's dominant 26-point display and Brandon Ingram's 25-point contribution, they fell short. Jonas Valanciunas added 14 points and 13 rebounds, supported by Naji Marshall's 14 points and nine boards from the bench.

While the Pelicans outscored the Jazz 68-38 in the paint, Utah held sway on the boards with a 48-43 advantage and capitalized on second-chance opportunities with a 20-9 lead in that department.

Despite a resilient effort, Pelicans coach Willie Green acknowledged the Jazz's ability to make crucial plays and secure loose balls, saying, “...they made more plays and got those 50-50 balls.”

The fourth quarter witnessed a tense back-and-forth as the Jazz surged ahead with a 10-3 run, bolstered by clutch three-pointers from Ochai Agbaji, ultimately reclaiming a lead they maintained till the end.

George's pivotal 3-pointer propelled Utah to a 114-107 advantage with 2:42 remaining, sealing the deal despite the Pelicans' attempts to narrow the margin.

Reflecting on the game, Williamson admitted, “We got some good looks...some shots just didn’t fall. That happens sometimes.”

Utah's early dominance with six 3-pointers in the first quarter set the tone, although New Orleans fought back and even grabbed a brief lead during the third quarter. Fontecchio and Omer Yurtseven stepped up in the absence of Lauri Markkanen, showcasing their potential with impactful starts.

Jazz coach Will Hardy affirmed the lineup changes weren't meant to send a message but rather to optimize their winning chances. He stated, “It wasn’t meant to punish anybody. It wasn’t meant to prove a point.”

Looking ahead, the Pelicans are set to host Philadelphia next, while the Jazz will travel to face Memphis in their upcoming fixtures.
