Rory McIlroy shakes off quadruple-bogey to stay ahead at Dubai Invitational

McIlroy began the second round with a strong lead of two shots over Yannik Paul (29), thanks to his impressive opening score of nine-under-par 62. However, his performance on the eighth hole threatened to undo all his hard work, as he hit the water twice and ended up with a quadruple bogey seven on the par-three hole. Despite this setback, McIlroy managed to regain his composure and scored three birdies on the back nine, allowing him to maintain his position at the top of the leaderboard.
Yannik Paul, despite making three bogeys on the front nine, managed to keep up with McIlroy by carding a score of 70, remaining two shots behind the leader. Joining Paul in second place was Jeff Winther (35) from Denmark, who shot an impressive five-under-par 65, the joint lowest round of the day. Unfortunately, a bogey on the final hole prevented Winther from securing outright second place.
Reflecting on his performance, Winther expressed his surprise and satisfaction, considering he hadn't played since Mauritius and had only started practicing on Monday. He humorously mentioned being a bit hungover from celebrating his wife's birthday over the weekend.
Tommy Fleetwood (32), Thorbjorn Olesen (34), Thriston Lawrence (27), Jordan Smith (31), and Zander Lombard (28) all remained three shots off the lead, with a score of seven-under-par.
