Ruben Amorim Appointed as Manchester United Manager

Manchester United announced Friday the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the club’s new manager, succeeding Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed earlier this week. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach, credited with securing two Primeira Liga titles for Sporting Lisbon, will officially join United on November 11, 2024, after finalizing his current commitments in Lisbon. Amorim’s contract extends through June 2027, with an option for an additional year.
"Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements," the club said in an official statement. "He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club."
Amorim is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches. His accomplishments with Sporting CP include leading the club to their first league title in 19 years, a feat United described as exemplary of his skill and leadership.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has served as interim manager, will remain at the helm until Amorim arrives at Old Trafford during the international break. Amorim’s debut as United manager is scheduled for an away match against Ipswich Town on November 24.
United moved quickly to secure Amorim following the club’s disappointing start to the season under Ten Hag, with the team currently sitting 14th in the Premier League standings. Sporting Lisbon confirmed earlier this week that United would meet Amorim’s €10 million ($11 million) release clause to expedite the deal.
At a press conference on Thursday, Amorim acknowledged the ongoing negotiations but refrained from elaborating. "It is a negotiation between two clubs. It’s never easy. Even with the clauses, they have to talk," he commented.

Ten Hag’s tenure included a League Cup and FA Cup win, yet United’s Premier League title drought continues, with their last league triumph dating back to Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2013. Ferguson’s legacy of 13 Premier League titles has loomed over successive managers, none of whom have been able to reclaim domestic dominance for the club.
Van Nistelrooy, preparing United for a high-stakes clash against Chelsea on Sunday, expressed enthusiasm about supporting the club through this transitional period. The former PSV Eindhoven manager hinted at his interest in staying under Amorim’s leadership, saying, "We will see… my desire is to help the club move forward."
With the appointment of Amorim, United fans and players alike are eager to see if this fresh approach can finally restore the club’s status as a title contender.
