Rublev defeats Ruusuvuori to claim Hong Kong title

Rublev has consistently made it to the quarter-finals of nine Grand Slam tournaments, but has never managed to progress beyond that stage.
However, his recent victory in the ATP Tour has made him one of the top contenders for the upcoming Australian Open at Melbourne Park. Rublev expressed his delight at winning the title, considering it to be a special achievement.
He is now looking forward to preparing for the Australian Open with a positive mindset and plans to enjoy a week of practice before the tournament begins.
It is worth noting that Rublev's last defeat against a player ranked outside the top 50 was against Ruusuvuori, who was ranked 69th, in a grueling match that lasted for three hours and sixteen minutes at the Cincinnati Masters last August.
However, Rublev's performance at Victoria Park suggests that a similar outcome is highly unlikely.
The final match saw both players quickly settling in, displaying impressive skills on the court. Ruusuvuori showcased powerful hits from the baseline, while Rublev responded with equally forceful counter-punching.
At 3-3, Rublev intensified his game and managed to take the lead with a remarkable backhand winner on his fourth break point. Although Ruusuvuori saved a set point at 4-5 and created his only break point opportunity, it was in vain as Rublev claimed the first set in 44 minutes.
In the second set, Rublev's dominance was even more evident than the scoreline indicated. He hardly relinquished a point on his own serve and consistently applied pressure on his 24-year-old opponent.
With a break to love, Rublev secured a 5-4 lead and ultimately clinched the championship on his first match point when Ruusuvuori made a netted error.
Reflecting on his victory, Rublev expressed his increased confidence for the upcoming Australian Open. He acknowledged the one-week preparation period and emphasized the importance of maintaining his fitness while continuing with his current approach.
This triumph at the Hong Kong Open marked Rublev as the first men's winner in over two decades since the tournament's return to the city. He joined the esteemed company of past champions, including legendary figures Rod Laver and Pete Sampras.
Ruusuvuori, in only his second ATP Tour final after Pune in 2022, paid tribute to Rublev during the trophy presentation. He commended Rublev's work ethic and competitive spirit, highlighting his kindness off the court.
Ruusuvuori acknowledged that Rublev deserved the victory and congratulated him and his team. Despite the loss, Ruusuvuori expressed his determination to continue fighting and anticipated many more battles between them in the future.
