Rüdiger Issues Apology After Red Card in Copa del Rey Final Chaos as Suspensions Confirmed

Toni Rüdiger has apologized publicly following his dramatic red card in Real Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final at Estadio de La Cartuja on Saturday night. After a fierce clash that extended into extra time, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed suspensions for Rüdiger, Jude Bellingham, and Lucas Vázquez, all sent off during the tense closing stages. However, it was clarified that Vinícius Jr. was not dismissed.
Rüdiger’s Regret and Potential Ban
In a heartfelt message posted on Sunday, Rüdiger said:
"There’s no excuse for my behaviour. I am very sorry — especially to the referee."
The 32-year-old German defender could now face a severe suspension of 4 to 12 matches under RFEF Article 101 for “mild violence toward referees” after he threw an object toward referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea from the substitutes' bench. Although the object did not hit the referee, Rüdiger had to be restrained by teammates and coaching staff following the incident.
Should the suspension extend beyond four games, it would not be limited to the Copa del Rey but could also impact Real Madrid’s La Liga campaign.
Bellingham and Vázquez Also Sanctioned
Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham faces a likely two-match ban after being dismissed post-match for confronting the referee with an aggressive demeanor. Similarly, Lucas Vázquez, who had been substituted earlier, was also handed a red card for entering the field to protest a decision and could receive a two-game suspension. These bans are expected to take effect during next season's Copa del Rey.
Their punishments are expected to impact next season's Copa del Rey, while Rüdiger’s heavier ban could spill into La Liga if it exceeds four matches. Interestingly, Vinícius Jr. was not among those penalized, avoiding any suspension despite the chaos.

Match Recap: Drama, Comebacks, and Tears
The match itself was a thriller:
- Barcelona clinched the title with goals from Pedri, Ferran Torres, and a late winner from Jules Koundé in the 116th minute.
- Real Madrid fought back through Kylian Mbappé and Aurélien Tchouaméni, but ultimately fell short.
Off the pitch, the match carried additional emotional weight. Referee De Burgos Bengoetxea had earlier broken down in tears during a pre-match press conference, revealing the personal toll of media attacks, including bullying incidents involving his young son.
What’s Next for Real Madrid?
With the suspensions looming, Carlo Ancelotti’s squad will need to recalibrate quickly. They return to action against Celta Vigo on May 4, followed by a highly anticipated trip to face Barcelona just a week later — matches that could prove decisive for their season.
