Rune and Medvedev set up quarter-final showdown, Ruud battles past Monfils

Holger Rune came back from losing the first set and fought off a match point to beat ex-champion Taylor Fritz 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-3 on Wednesday, advancing to the quarter-finals of Indian Wells where he is set to face fourth seed Daniil Medvedev.

Rune conceded the first set in just 32 minutes and seemed to be on the verge of defeat when 2022 champion Fritz took a 5-4, 40-30 lead in the next set. However, the seventh seed managed to hold his ground and force a tiebreak, turning the tide of the match.

The Danish player then elevated his performance to even the score at one set apiece and broke his American opponent for the first time, showcasing some impressive shotmaking skills to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the final set.

As Fritz's game began to falter in the California desert, Rune completed his remarkable comeback by serving out the match, sealing the victory with a powerful forehand winner.

Reflecting on his triumph, Rune expressed his astonishment at the turnaround. "It was an incredible experience. I remained focused on the present moment and kept fighting, striving to improve point by point.

Towards the end of the second set, I managed to elevate my game to an astonishing level, and that made all the difference in the match," Rune stated.

"He had control in the first set and for a significant portion of the second set as well, so I'm simply delighted that I was able to persevere. I maintained my belief that I would eventually find my rhythm. It was a close call, but I managed to discover it, which was truly satisfying."

Rune's next opponent will be last year's runner-up, Medvedev, who showcased an exceptional performance in his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Grigor Dimitrov, displaying near-flawless tennis as he aims for his first title of the year following his defeat in the Australian Open final.

Having split their two previous encounters last year, Rune emphasized his aggressive playing style and determination to attack regardless of his opponent. "I'm a player who always goes on the offensive. It doesn't matter who I face; I will always adopt an attacking approach," Rune asserted.

"Facing Daniil is an entirely different match compared to today. The only similarity between him and Fritz is their powerful serves. However, Fritz tends to position himself closer to the baseline, while Medvedev prefers to stay farther back."

"Medvedev is just as dangerous as Fritz on this surface. I will focus on recovering and maintaining belief in myself, just as I did today."

Casper Ruud defeated Gael Monfils with a 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 victory before facing Tommy Paul.

In the match, Ruud struggled initially against Monfils but became more aggressive in the second set, eventually breaking his opponent in the deciding set to secure the win.

Meanwhile, Tommy Paul defeated lucky loser Luca Nardi with a 6-4, 6-3 victory after Nardi's impressive performance against Novak Djokovic earlier in the tournament.
