Rune reflects on valuable lessons learned from his defeat to Draper at Indian Wells

Holger Rune expressed satisfaction with his performance in reaching the final of the Indian Wells ATP 1000 tournament; however, he acknowledged the necessity of regaining his aggressive playing style in upcoming competitions to further his development.
His opponent, 14th seed Jack Draper, established control from the outset, breaking Rune's serve early and maintaining his dominance throughout the match with a powerful serve and precise returns.
In his reflections on the final, Rune admitted that he should have taken a more assertive stance during the match and made better use of the chances that presented themselves.
Expressing his disappointment, Rune said, “I think I could have done my part better. Like the opportunities I had to play aggressive just weren’t good enough. I think it’s a matter of fact that I haven’t committed, I mean, I have been playing well in this tournament, been playing tactically very wisely but I haven’t played, like, fully committed to my aggressive game still.”
Rune has participated in four finals at the Masters 1000 level. He achieved victory in his inaugural final at the Paris Masters in 2022, but faced defeats in 2023 on clay at both Monte Carlo and Rome.
The Danish player emphasizes his performance at the Paris Masters in 2022 as a prime example of the style of play he aspires to emulate.
" Back then I was committed to my form of tennis. When I was in stressful situations, I reacted by becoming more aggressive and going to the net more. Against Jack, I fell further back on the court, and that doesn't work against a player in good form."
"I need to focus on training to adopt a more aggressive playing style, which will enhance my chances of winning the tournaments I enter," stated Rune, who, after the match, struggled to hold back tears as he expressed profound gratitude to his family during his speech, saying, "I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my family back home. They are everything to me."
Rune is now set to prepare for the next phase of the "Sunshine double," as he will compete in the ATP 1000 tournament in Miami next week.
