Ruud misses early semifinal opportunity as Zverev secures second victory at ATP Finals

Casper Ruud, aged 25, missed an opportunity to advance to the semi-finals of the ATP Finals in Turin after suffering a straight-sets defeat to Alexander Zverev, 27, on Wednesday evening.
Earlier that day, Carlos Alcaraz commenced his tournament campaign with an engaging victory over Andrey Rublev, winning 6-3, 7-6.
World number three Alcaraz's convincing win over Rublev allowed him to move off the bottom of the John Newcombe Group, showcasing improved form despite having faced fatigue and illness prior to the match.
Conversely, Rublev fell to the last position after enduring his sixth consecutive loss at the Finals, although he fought valiantly and had two chances to secure the second set.
Alcaraz's straight-sets victory meant that Ruud could have secured a semi-final berth with a match to spare had he triumphed over the two-time Finals champion Zverev in the evening's match.
However, Zverev delivered a formidable performance, winning in straight sets with scores of 7-6, 6-3, thereby almost guaranteeing his place in the semi-finals with his second victory in as many matches.
Zverev seized control during the tie-break of the first set, which had previously seen both players hold serve, and he continued to dominate by breaking in the eighth game of the second set before serving out the match to love.
"I believe it was a very good match from both sides," Zverev remarked on the court. "I am pleased with today's win, but it was extremely close. A point or two determined the first set, and I thought both of us played at a very high level."
