Ryder Cup: U.S. Secures First Full Point After 28 Hours with Rookies Homa and Harman

The U.S. team finally secured its first full point at the Ryder Cup after nearly 28 hours of play, thanks to the dynamic rookie duo of Max Homa and Brian Harman. The pair clinched the crucial point by defeating Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka 4 and 2 in the morning foursomes on Saturday at Marco Simone.
Max Homa, who had already taken off his hat in anticipation of celebrating with his partner, was pleasantly surprised when his chip for eagle on the reachable par-4 16th rolled in. This victory was a much-needed boost for the American team, which had been trailing in the competition.
“We needed something to go our way,” Homa said, “Somebody had to start a spark, so I’m just glad it was us.”
However, the U.S. team only managed to secure this single point during the morning session, with Europe still maintaining a significant lead of 9½ to 2½.
Despite the challenging situation, Homa remains optimistic about the team's prospects, saying, “We obviously are in a big hole, but we have the right guys to dig ourselves out of it.”
Max Homa had previously displayed his team spirit during last year's Presidents Cup, where he went 4-0 in his first team experience. He had also earned a half point with Wyndham Clark on Friday during the afternoon fourballs. However, that match felt like a missed opportunity after Homa narrowly missed a putt on the 18th hole, allowing the opposition to halve the match.
Homa and Harman had the chance to redeem themselves in Saturday’s fourballs against Tommy Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard. Remarkably, Homa became the only American player to participate in all five sessions of this Ryder Cup.
In their victorious morning foursomes against Lowry and Straka, Homa and Harman took the lead early and never looked back. Brian Harman, the British Open champion of this year, played a pivotal role by sinking a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-4 10th hole, putting the Americans ahead. Homa then showcased his exceptional skills with a nearly perfect long iron shot on the par-5 12th hole, almost holing it out. This exceptional play was met with enthusiastic chants of “USA, USA, USA” from the crowd.
Harman summed up the importance of their win, stating, “It was good to come out and at least put red up on the board.” This victory was indeed a much-needed boost for the U.S. team as they continue their quest for Ryder Cup glory.
