Sabalenka cautious about overthinking things as she prepares to defend her Australian Open title

Aryna Sabalenka, aged 26, is set to pursue her third consecutive Australian Open title with the same fervor as if it were her inaugural victory, having successfully abandoned the mindset of a defending champion last year.

As the world number one, she is the clear frontrunner to triumph once more at Melbourne Park, recognized as the premier hardcourt player in women's tennis. However, she aims to alleviate the psychological pressure associated with title defense and maintain a straightforward approach.

"I recall that last year I did not focus on being the defending champion at all," the Belarusian remarked to reporters at Melbourne Park on Friday.

"I approached each match step by step. I believe that was the key to my success. This year, I intend to adopt the same strategy."

"Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to lift this beautiful trophy once again."

A victory in Melbourne would place Sabalenka among a distinguished group of women who have achieved a "three-peat," including legends such as Margaret Court (1969-71), Steffi Graf (1988-90), and Martina Hingis (1997-99).

However, Sabalenka does not closely follow these statistics.

"I do not read about tennis history every day; there is already enough tennis in my life," she chuckled.

"Naturally, I am aware that winning three times in a row would align me with legends. Nevertheless, I prefer not to overthink it. I simply want to focus on my performance."

Once susceptible to moments of anxiety, the formidable Belarusian now possesses the confidence gained from securing three Grand Slam titles and achieving the world number one ranking.

She is also in excellent form, having recently won the Brisbane International.

While some athletes may feel burdened by the expectations that accompany reaching the pinnacle of the sport, Sabalenka expresses that she thrives under such pressure.

"For me, it has always been a part of my character. I have always enjoyed competition," she stated.

"This drive motivates me, as I am aware that I have a target on my back.

"I genuinely appreciate that challenge, which is why I work diligently to ensure that no one can surpass me."

She will compete against American Sloane Stephens, a former US Open champion whose ranking has fallen to 84th, in the opening round.

"We have had intense matches in the past. At this moment, I believe she is in a mindset of having nothing to lose," stated Sabalenka.
