Sabalenka defeats Badosa to advance to Third Straight Australian Open Final

Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning world number one, triumphed over her close friend Paula Badosa on Thursday to secure a spot in her third consecutive Australian Open final, continuing her dominance on the hard courts of Melbourne Park. Sabalenka’s 6-4, 6-2 victory extended her winning streak at the tournament to 20 matches, placing her on the brink of a historic achievement not seen in over two decades.
Closing in on History
Sabalenka, 26, is poised to become the first woman since Martina Hingis in 1999 to win three consecutive Australian Open titles. Only four other women—Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf, and Monica Seles—have accomplished the feat.
“Honestly, I’m so proud of myself and my team for being in this position,” said Sabalenka. “If I’m able to put my name into history, it will mean the world to me.”
A Clash of Friends
Despite their strong friendship, Sabalenka and Badosa left emotions off the court. Badosa, the 11th seed, entered the semi-final after stunning Coco Gauff in straight sets to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final. However, she struggled against Sabalenka’s relentless baseline power and precision.
Sabalenka rallied from an early break deficit in the first set, seizing control with a three-game streak and clinching the opener with an ace. In the second set, she capitalized on Badosa’s double faults to break twice and cruised to victory.
The match wasn’t without its lighter moments. When Badosa tumbled reaching for a shot, both players burst into laughter, briefly pausing the action before Sabalenka refocused to complete the win.
World Number One Showdown Looms
With this victory, Sabalenka retains her hold on the world number one ranking. However, a potential final against Iga Swiatek, the current world number two, could see the ranking determined by the outcome of the match. Swiatek was set to face Madison Keys in the second semi-final.
Badosa’s Remarkable Comeback
Though defeated, Badosa’s journey to the semi-finals marked a stunning resurgence. The former world number two battled back from a career-threatening back injury in 2023 that had her contemplating retirement. Her performance in Melbourne ensures her return to the WTA Top 10 for the first time since October 2022.
Saturday Showdown
Sabalenka will now prepare to face either Swiatek or Keys in what promises to be an electrifying final. A win would cement her legacy as one of Melbourne Park’s all-time greats.
