Sabalenka defeats Paolini to reach WTA Semifinals

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the semi-finals of the WTA Finals by defeating Italian fourth seed Jasmine Paolini (28) with a score of 6-3, 7-5 on Monday, maintaining her unbeaten status in the purple round-robin group.
The Belarusian is on the verge of securing the year-end number-one ranking. A victory against Elena Rybakina in her final group match on Wednesday, or a loss by her competitor, Poland's Iga Swiatek, would guarantee her the top position for the year.
Sabalenka's triumph, coupled with Chinese player Zheng Qinwen’s earlier win over Rybakina (7-6, 3-6, 6-1), ensures that the top seed will finish first in her group, irrespective of the outcome of her final match on Wednesday, making her the first player to qualify for the semi-finals.

The champion of both the Australian Open and the US Open also secured a victory in her opening match in Riyadh against seventh seed Zheng. Both Zheng and Paolini, who hold 1-1 records, remain in the running for the semi-finals and are set to compete against each other on Wednesday.
Swiatek is the sole player capable of surpassing Sabalenka. The 23-year-old, who is scheduled to face Coco Gauff on Tuesday, must win her title without any losses and rely on Sabalenka losing her remaining matches to claim the year-end number one ranking.
"I’m proud of myself. Not only of myself, but also of my team," Sabalenka remarked following her victory.
"We have managed to overcome numerous challenges. To demonstrate such exceptional tennis and achieve the status of world number one is a collective effort. It is not solely my accomplishment."
"The behind-the-scenes efforts often go unnoticed, yet they contribute significantly to my success. I am truly grateful for everything they do for me."
"This serves as motivation for me to continue winning on this court. They deserve to be recognized as the best team ever."
