Sabalenka determined to hold onto world number one spot after overtaking Swiatek

Aryna Sabalenka's ascension to the top position in the WTA rankings, surpassing Iga Swiatek, has created an exciting conclusion to the season.

The upcoming WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia next month are poised to be pivotal in determining who will finish the year as the world number one.

Sabalenka has had an outstanding season, successfully defending her Australian Open title in January and securing the US Open trophy last month, in addition to her victories in Cincinnati and Wuhan.

Players are required to participate in six WTA 500 events; however, Swiatek's choice to forgo the Asian leg of the tour due to fatigue has limited her to only two events this season.

As a result of these penalties, she has fallen behind Sabalenka in the rankings.

Last year, Sabalenka held the top spot for eight weeks before Swiatek reclaimed it with a win at the season-ending WTA Finals. The Belarusian is now hopeful for a more extended tenure as the number one player.

"N1... Let's see for how long this time," she remarked on X on Monday following the release of the latest rankings.

This week, Sabalenka is not competing after her success in Wuhan and will incur point deductions for participating in only four WTA 500 events. Currently, she has 9,706 points, while Swiatek has 9,665 points ahead of the Finals, which will award 1,500 points.

The Finals are scheduled to take place on hard courts in Riyadh from November 2-9, featuring the top eight singles players and doubles teams.
