Sabalenka overpowers Raducanu, Osaka knocked out

Aryna Sabalenka's dominant serve and groundstrokes were overwhelming for Emma Raducanu, leading the Australian Open champion to advance to the fourth round at Indian Wells after a 6-3, 7-5 win. Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka suffered a defeat in straight sets against Elise Mertens.

Britain's former Grand Slam champion Raducanu is currently working on regaining her form after undergoing multiple surgeries last year. Although she played well, she struggled to capitalize on her opportunities, only converting one out of ten break points in her first encounter with Sabalenka.

On the other hand, the Belarusian player, who has had her fair share of struggles with double faults in the past, did experience one on her first match point.

However, she managed to maintain her composure and delivered a powerful cross-court forehand winner on her fourth opportunity, securing the victory under the sunny skies of the California desert.

Sabalenka, who is seeded second in the tournament, acknowledged the significance of the last game, considering it a pivotal moment. She believed that losing that game would have given Raducanu a significant emotional boost and confidence, potentially leading to an unpredictable tiebreak. Sabalenka expressed her relief after closing out the match in two sets, avoiding any further complications.

Having previously won her second consecutive Australian Open in January, Sabalenka will now face American Emma Navarro in the Round of 16, anticipating another challenging match.

In another notable match, Mertens displayed great composure and determination as she defeated Osaka with a gutsy 7-5, 6-4 victory. Osaka, who returned to the WTA Tour in January following a maternity break, faced a resilient Mertens, who managed to fend off break points in the final game.

Celebrating one of the most significant wins of her career, Mertens reached the Round of 16 at the tournament for the first time, leaping in the air in jubilation.

Mertens will face a formidable opponent in the form of third seed Coco Gauff, posing a tough challenge in the upcoming match.

Gauff was not at her peak performance, yet she still overcame Italian Lucia Bronzetti with a score of 6-2, 7-6(5) in her final singles match as a teenager.

Bronzetti posed a challenge for the third seed, but Gauff managed to save 10 out of the 11 break points she encountered, securing her spot in the fourth round where she will be up against Mertens on her 20th birthday.

Gauff acknowledged the difficulty of facing Mertens, stating, "Every match against her is a tough battle. I have never had an easy win against her.

Despite my 3-0 record, the outcome could have easily been different. She is a formidable opponent with strong strokes, clean ball-hitting, good serving skills, and she truly makes you work for the victory."
