San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Popovich out indefinitely with health issues

Assistant coach Mitch Johnson will assume the role of interim head coach for the San Antonio Spurs following the announcement that Greg Popovich will be absent for the upcoming two-game road trip due to health concerns.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, referencing a league source, Popovich is reported to be "OK" and simply requires some time to rest.

Johnson stepped in for Popovich on Saturday, just two and a half hours prior to the Spurs' home win against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

"He’s not feeling well," Johnson informed reporters over the weekend. "This has occurred before. I believe everyone must always be prepared for the next person to step up... He’s just not feeling well."

Popovich was at the helm when the Spurs secured a victory against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City on Thursday.

The Spurs are set to face the Clippers in Los Angeles on Monday and the Rockets in Houston on Wednesday, before returning home to host the Trail Blazers on Thursday.

Popovich holds the record as the NBA's all-time winningest coach, with 1,390 regular-season victories and an additional 170 playoff wins.

Throughout his 29 seasons leading the Spurs, he has led the team to five NBA championships.
