Sancho and Reus send Borussia Dortmund into Champions League quarters

Borussia Dortmund secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League with a goal in each half, defeating PSV Eindhoven 2-0 (3-1 on aggregate) at Signal Iduna Park.

PSV were taken aback by the lightning-fast start made by Dortmund right from the beginning of the match. In just the second minute, a poor clearance from PSV led to an opportunity for one of the hosts' own Dutch players, Ian Maatsen. His shot forced Walter Benitez to make a save by palming the ball over the top.

Unfortunately for PSV, the goalkeeper was unable to prevent another goal just a minute later. Once again, poor clearing by the visitors allowed Julian Brandt to pass the ball to Jadon Sancho, who scored a 20-yard strike into the bottom corner of the net.

Dortmund continued to launch waves of attacks, with Niclas Fullkrug leading the charge. On the 18th minute, Brandt took a shot from a difficult angle, but Benitez managed to save it. Donyell Malen then blasted the rebound straight at the goalkeeper.

Malen, a former PSV player, had two more attempts that went wide as he tried to score his second goal of the match. Guus Til, Johan Bakayoko, and Luuk de Jong all had chances to equalize before halftime, but they failed to capitalize on them.

Malen's determination to outdo Benítez was not hindered by the break, as he managed to create space inside the box three minutes into the second half, only to have his attempt saved by the goalkeeper.

On the opposite side, Hirving Lozano came close to making a significant impact for Peter Bosz's team, hitting the post with a powerful shot from 25 yards out, while Jordan Teze's shot was saved by Gregor Kobel.

Despite appearing to dominate the game, Fullkrug missed a chance to extend the lead after the hour mark, heading straight at Benítez despite being unmarked in the penalty area.

In the final 20 minutes of the match, Bakayoko tested Kobel once again, and shortly after, Fullkrug seemed to have scored off Reus' free-kick, only for VAR to disallow the goal for offside.

Following De Jong's missed opportunity in injury time, Dortmund secured victory through Reus, who calmly slotted the ball past Benitez, sending the 1997 champions to the quarter-finals for the first time in three years, while PSV will now focus on maintaining their unbeaten record in the Eredivisie.
