Schauffele sets sights on more success in Japan following major breakthroughs

Xander Schauffele expressed on Tuesday that securing a victory at this week's Zozo Championship in Japan would serve as the "cherry on top" of a remarkable year, during which he achieved triumphs in two major tournaments. Activity

Once regarded as a perennial contender, Schauffele claimed victory at the PGA Championship in May, followed by a win at the British Open two months later at Royal Troon.

The 30-year-old American is participating in the US PGA Tour's Zozo Championship in Japan, a country significant to him as it is where his Taiwanese mother was raised and where he still has extended family.

Schauffele has previously experienced success in Japan, having won a pandemic-delayed gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. He expressed enthusiasm about playing in front of his relatives at the par-70 Narashino Country Club.

"It would be a cherry on top. Many of my family members will be present, including my grandparents," he remarked.

"Winning would be particularly meaningful, as I do not often have the opportunity to see them. Presenting the gold medal to them was a truly special moment during that challenging Covid year.

"Achieving another victory in their presence would be even more significant," he added.

Schauffele will encounter strong competition from a field that features defending champion Collin Morikawa and Japan's Olympic bronze medallist Hideki Matsuyama.

Last month, Schauffele contributed to the United States' victory over the Internationals at the Presidents Cup in Montreal.

He described 2024 as "a dream come true" thus far.

"Winning two majors in a single season is something one dreams about," he stated.

"For me to accomplish this is incredibly special. I will always cherish the memories of 2024."

The Zozo Championship is expected to experience mixed weather conditions, and Schauffele has participated in the event multiple times in the past.

He noted that the course presents a "very polarising" challenge, with certain holes appearing more conducive to birdies than others.

"My strategy is to treat the two aspects separately and approach them as distinct tournaments," he concluded.
