Scheffler, McIlroy and Schauffele headline nominees for PGA Player of the Year

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler (28), two-time major champion Xander Schauffele (31), and DP World Tour Championship victor Rory McIlroy (35) were announced on Monday as nominees for the 2024 PGA Tour Player of the Year award.

The Jack Nicklaus Award, named after the legendary 18-time major champion, along with the Arnold Palmer Award for PGA Rookie of the Year, will be determined by votes from PGA Tour members until December 4, with the winners to be revealed by the end of the year.

Nominees for the PGA Rookie of the Year include Matthieu Pavon from France, as well as Americans Nick Dunlap, Jake Knapp, and Max Greyserman.

Scheffler and Schauffele are considered frontrunners in the competition for the top player accolade.

Scheffler secured Olympic gold in Paris and achieved seven victories on the PGA Tour, including his second Masters title in three years.

Additionally, he triumphed at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, the Heritage and Memorial tournaments, the Travelers Championship, and the season-concluding Tour Championship, ultimately winning the FedEx Cup.

He led the season in earnings and received the Byron Nelson Award for maintaining a low scoring average of 68.645 strokes, finishing with 16 top-10 placements on the PGA Tour without missing a cut.

Schauffele claimed his first two major titles, winning both the PGA Championship and the British Open, and he ranked second in scoring average at 69.137, also achieving 15 top-10 finishes without missing a cut.

McIlroy partnered with Irishman Shane Lowry to win the Zurich Classic and secured his fourth Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour, finishing with 15 top-10 results without a missed cut.

The golfer from Northern Ireland came close to securing his fifth major title and his first since 2014, ultimately finishing in second place at the US Open, where he was bested by Bryson DeChambeau.

Among the newcomers, 20-year-old Dunlap emerged as an unexpected highlight. He claimed the American Express title as an amateur through a sponsor exemption in January, subsequently turned professional, and went on to win the Barracuda Championship, making history as the first player to achieve victories as both an amateur and a professional in the same season.

Pavon, aged 32, triumphed at the Farmers Insurance Open and achieved third place at Pebble Beach, in addition to finishing fifth at the US Open. He was the sole rookie to qualify for the season-concluding Tour Championship.

Knapp, 30, celebrated his inaugural PGA title at the Mexico Open, while Greyserman, 29, finished as a runner-up on three occasions.
