Seahawks’ relentless Defense smothers 49ers as Seattle clinch NFC West and No. 1 Seed

Cigar smoke filled the visiting locker room at Levi’s Stadium as the Seattle Seahawks celebrated a statement victory that echoed one of the franchise’s most iconic eras.

The Seahawks delivered a suffocating 13–3 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night, sealing the NFC West title and securing the top seed in the NFC playoffs. It was a performance built on defensive dominance, resilience, and timely execution, the kind that once defined Seattle’s famed Legion of Boom.

“I couldn’t breathe,” defensive end Leonard Williams joked, grinning through the haze. “But it’s a good choke.”

For Seattle, this was more than just a division win. It marked their first NFC West crown since 2020 and confirmed them as legitimate Super Bowl contenders, now just two home wins away from the NFL’s biggest stage.

Defense sets the tone

From the opening snap, Seattle’s defense overwhelmed a San Francisco offense that had shredded the Chicago Bears for 42 points just six days earlier. This time, Brock Purdy and company were held to just nine first downs, 173 total yards, and their lowest scoring output in more than eight years.

Leonard Williams, DeMarcus Lawrence, Byron Murphy, Devon Witherspoon, Ernest Jones, and Nick Emmanwori consistently collapsed the pocket and erased passing lanes. San Francisco never found rhythm, repeatedly stalled by three-and-out drives and a critical fourth-down stop.

Coach Mike Macdonald, whose defensive blueprint continues to pay dividends, refused to take personal credit. “Our players made it come to life,” Macdonald said. “They were determined, resilient, and played incredibly well.”

Drake Thomas’ Moment of Destiny

The defining moment arrived early in the fourth quarter with Seattle leading 13–3. San Francisco reached the red zone for the first time, threatening to shift momentum.

Instead, linebacker Drake Thomas produced a play that sealed the division.

Purdy’s pass deflected off Boye Mafe’s hand, slipped past Christian McCaffrey, and landed perfectly into Thomas’ grasp for a stunning interception.

“Ball finds energy,” Macdonald said. “Drake’s been playing great football. He deserves massive credit.”

Thomas, ever humble, shrugged it off. “It bounced right into my hands. God is good.” That interception extinguished San Francisco’s final hope and reinforced Seattle’s identity as a defense-first powerhouse.

Offense does just enough

While the defense dominated, the offense delivered timely contributions. Sam Darnold completed 20 of 26 passes for 198 yards, avoiding turnovers for just the fourth time all season. Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp moved the chains, while Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet powered the ground game.

Charbonnet’s 27-yard touchdown run in the first half proved decisive. Walker added 97 rushing yards, continuing Seattle’s recent surge on the ground. Over the last three games, the Seahawks have rushed for over 170 yards each time, a critical development heading into the playoffs.

The victory pushed Seattle to a franchise-record 14 wins, the most in their 50-season NFL history. It also marked the fourth time the Seahawks have earned the No. 1 seed in the conference, and notably, each previous instance ended in a Super Bowl appearance.

Seattle now earns a first-round bye and will host the lowest remaining seed in the NFC Divisional Round on January 17–18.

“I’ve thought about it,” Walker admitted. “But it’s still one game at a time.”

Respect from the Rival

Even in defeat, the 49ers acknowledged Seattle’s achievement. “They won the division. They got the one seed. They won in a rival stadium,” George Kittle said. “I’d do the same thing.”

As the cigars burned and music thumped through the locker room, one truth was clear: the Seahawks are back among the NFL’s elite, powered by a defense capable of carrying them all the way.
