Sean Dyche sacked by Nottingham Forest after 114 days

Nottingham Forest’s turbulent season has taken another dramatic turn with the sacking of head coach Sean Dyche after just 114 days in charge, following Wednesday night’s 0-0 draw with Wolves.

Dyche departs the City Ground having overseen only 17 matches, becoming the club’s third managerial casualty of the campaign. The decision was confirmed in the early hours of Thursday morning, roughly three hours after Forest failed to score against a Wolves side rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

Despite arriving with a reputation for organisation, resilience and survival know-how, Dyche was unable to spark a meaningful upturn in results or performances. Forest have won none of their last three league matches, collecting just two points from games against Crystal Palace and Wolves, while suffering a damaging 3-1 defeat to relegation rivals Leeds.

Forest currently sit three points above the relegation zone with 12 league matches remaining, a position that owner Evangelos Marinakis is understood to consider unacceptable given the club’s investment and attacking resources.

Another abrupt end at the City ground

Dyche’s dismissal continues a season marked by instability in the dugout. He follows Nuno Espírito Santo and Ange Postecoglou, the latter lasting just 39 days in charge, as Forest struggle to find continuity or identity.

The short-term nature of Dyche’s appointment was clear from the outset. He was handed a contract running only until the end of next season, with a brief focused on ensuring Premier League survival and lifting Forest away from persistent relegation danger.

However, patience wore thin as Forest’s attacking struggles persisted. The club have scored just 25 goals in 26 league matches, a concerning return for a side boasting creative talents such as Morgan Gibbs-White, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Elliot Anderson.

Attacking Frustrations Drive Decision

Sources close to the club suggest Marinakis’ frustration centred on Forest’s inability to convert possession and attacking quality into goals. Significant funds were committed during the summer transfer window, with further reinforcements added in January, yet Forest continue to labour in the final third.

Failing to score at home against Wolves proved decisive. For a club seeking breathing space above the drop zone, the result felt like a missed opportunity too far.

Vitor Pereira talks lined up

Forest are now expected to explore talks with Vitor Pereira, a familiar figure to Marinakis. The Portuguese coach previously enjoyed success under the Forest owner at Olympiakos, winning a league and cup double in 2015.

Pereira also has recent Premier League experience, having guided Wolves to safety last season after taking over in December 2024, though he was later dismissed following a poor start to the current campaign.

Dyche Breaks Silence

Speaking after the Wolves draw, Dyche struck a reflective tone, acknowledging the realities of modern football while praising the club’s ownership.

He described Marinakis as “absolutely fair” throughout his time at Forest, adding that managerial change has become part of the landscape at elite level. Dyche maintained he had worked tirelessly for the club and harboured no resentment over the decision.

European Distraction Looms

Forest now face a brief pause before a pivotal stretch of fixtures. Players have been given time off, with no immediate training scheduled, as the club prepares for a Europa League knockout play-off away to Fenerbahce next Thursday.

That European tie is followed by a daunting Premier League run, including matches against Liverpool, Brighton and Manchester City. Whoever steps into the dugout will have little time to implement ideas before pressure returns.

For Nottingham Forest, the Dyche dismissal underlines a season defined by urgency, expectation and impatience. Whether another reset can finally stabilise the club remains the looming question.
