Sebastian Baez defends Rio Open title with dominant win over Alexandre Muller

Sebastian Baez successfully defended his Rio Open crown on Sunday, defeating France’s Alexandre Muller 6-2, 6-3 to secure his seventh ATP title. The 24-year-old Argentine showcased his dominance on the clay courts, finding his rhythm early and breaking Muller in the seventh game to take a commanding 5-2 lead before closing out the opening set with ease.

Muller put up a stronger fight in the second set, briefly taking a 3-2 lead and applying pressure on Baez. However, the defending champion responded with confidence, regaining control to seal the victory. Baez’s aggressive play saw him hit 26 winners while keeping unforced errors to just 23, demonstrating his precision and composure under pressure.

Reflecting on his triumph, Baez acknowledged the challenges he faced throughout the tournament. "It's been tough all week and over the last month, but I'm so happy now, for the title and of course for every match I played," he said. He also credited his team and mental focus for his success, adding, "You want to win every final, every title, but I tried to concentrate in every game, one point at a time. I think the support is very important, so I'm grateful for my team."

With this victory, Baez further cements his reputation as a rising force on the ATP Tour, reinforcing his dominance on clay as he continues his quest for more titles in the 2024 season.
