Sepp Straka claims third PGA Tour title with victory at the American Express

Austrian golfer Sepp Straka, aged 31, demonstrated remarkable composure to secure his third title on the US PGA Tour in impressive fashion on Sunday. He recorded a two-under-par 70 to clinch victory at the American Express in La Quinta, California, finishing two strokes ahead of his competitors.
Beginning the final round with a four-shot advantage over three challengers, Straka maintained this lead after achieving his fourth birdie of the day at the par-three 13th hole, recognized as the most difficult on the Stadium Course.
However, the path to victory was not entirely straightforward. Straka's margin was reduced to three strokes following his first bogey of the tournament at the par-five 16th, where his second shot veered right from the fairway, and his attempt to save par from 15 feet missed the hole.
He also recorded a bogey on the 18th hole, yet his total score of 25-under-par ensured he finished two strokes ahead of former world number one Justin Thomas, who shot a six-under-par 66 for a total of 265.
Another ex-world number one, Australian Jason Day, fell out of a tie with Thomas after bogeying the 18th, concluding with a three-under-par 69, which placed him in a tie for third alongside American Justin Lower, who also carded a 69.
Despite his substantial lead at the start of the day, Straka admitted to feeling "nerves, complete nerves" as he approached the final holes.
"My stomach was in a knot the whole nine," the Austrian remarked, although he maintained a calm exterior throughout the round.
Straka commenced his day with an 11-foot birdie on the first hole and added further birdies at the fourth and seventh holes.
Charlie Hoffman, who was tied for second with Lower and Day at the start of the day, made four birdies on the front nine, reducing Straka's lead by one shot.
However, Hoffman's hopes for a fifth career title, his first since 2016, were dashed when he incurred a triple-bogey six at the 13th hole after finding the water twice.
He finished with a one-under-par 71, placing him in a tie for fifth with Patrick Cantlay, who recorded a 70.
"This golf course demands constant focus," Straka stated. "I believe the greatest challenge today was maintaining an aggressive approach towards my targets."
I encountered numerous opportunities for bogeys during the round, yet my putting proved to be a significant asset on many occasions.
Thomas, who secured his most recent victory at the 2022 PGA Championship, commenced his effort to overcome a six-shot deficit with a robust performance.
The American recorded five birdies on the front nine, including impressive 16-foot putts at both the second and ninth holes.
He added another birdie at the 11th hole before the birdie opportunities ceased in the warm California desert near Palm Springs.
"I played well, I had a chance," Thomas remarked. "I executed my strategy effectively on the front nine today to ensure I was making an impact and advancing up the leaderboard.
"It was unfortunate to experience a slowdown after the 11th," he continued. "I truly played exceptional golf today, hitting remarkable shots and sinking some excellent putts, although some did not find the hole."
