Set-piece struggles pose challenge for Manchester United's Amorim

Addressing Manchester United's alarming deficiencies in defending set pieces has swiftly emerged as a primary focus for new head coach Ruben Amorim. His strategic plans have been undermined by the team's inability to effectively manage threats during corner situations.
Nottingham Forest capitalized on this vulnerability, scoring from a corner just 90 seconds into the match at Old Trafford on Saturday, contributing to United's 3-2 defeat.
This outcome highlighted that Amorim's squad had not adequately learned from their previous 2-0 loss to Arsenal, where both goals were similarly derived from set pieces.
Amorim acknowledged his accountability during a press conference, stating, "When this occurs, it falls on me, as I bear the responsibility. We endeavored to address this issue, having invested considerable effort in this area following the Arsenal match, yet it remains a significant challenge."
He further elaborated, "At the start of the game against Forest, conceding so early makes it difficult to instill energy in the team. Although we managed to equalize, we faced the same issues in the second half."
The team's lack of physicality and height in defense has been exposed during free kicks and corners. In response, Amorim adjusted his lineup in the second half, introducing center-back Harry Maguire when the score was 3-2, indicating his concern about further concessions.
"We brought Harry Maguire on to enhance our control over the initial aerial duels. Our only viable approach against Nottingham was through quick transitions, aiming to secure both first and second balls. Once Harry entered the field, he dominated those initial contests," Amorim explained.
Unfortunately, the damage had already been inflicted by that point.
A straightforward screen allowed Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic to evade Lisandro Martinez and score. Subsequently, both Martinez and goalkeeper Andre Onana were culpable for Forest's third goal in the 54th minute, a looping header from Chris Wood that should have been addressed by one of them.
"Everyone is aware of the significant focus on set pieces nowadays; it represents a major opportunity for both sides. We executed well today," expressed a pleased Chris Wood, the New Zealand striker.
Despite the rocky beginning to his tenure at Old Trafford, Amorim affirmed his commitment to his foundational principles.
Amorim affirmed his commitment to his principles, notwithstanding his uncertain beginning at Old Trafford.
"This is a common occurrence for many clubs, and we must persist in our efforts to enhance the team, as this situation will eventually change," he stated.
