Sevilla, Lens Battle to 1-1 Stalemate in Champions League Group B Opener

Sevilla and Lens couldn't be separated in their Group B Champions League opener, settling for a 1-1 draw at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium on Wednesday. The hosts took the lead early with Lucas Ocampos heading in a goal in the ninth minute. However, Angelo Fulgini brought Lens level with a powerful free-kick strike in the 24th minute.
"We played better than they did," Ocampos commented after the match. "But these games are difficult. There's a reason they are in the Champions League; they are a great team."
Sevilla came into the match fresh off their first win of the season in La Liga against Las Palmas on Sunday. In contrast, Lens had struggled recently, going winless in their last five matches, with four losses and a draw.
Fulgini, the goalscorer for Lens, expressed his satisfaction, saying, "My goal did us a lot of good because I think if we didn't equalize so soon, we would have struggled. The goal came at a good time. The free kick came off for me, and we can be pleased today."
Sergio Ramos, the former Spain and Real Madrid defender, made his 138th Champions League appearance, marking his debut in the competition with Sevilla. Sevilla is making their fourth consecutive Champions League appearance but was eliminated in the group stage in the last two seasons.
Lens, currently at the bottom of the French league, was making their third-ever Champions League appearance and their first in the group stage in 21 years. They failed to advance to the knockout rounds in both of their previous appearances in 1998-99 and 2002-03. Their last match in a European competition was in 2007.
In the next round, Lens will host Arsenal, while Sevilla will visit PSV Eindhoven.
