Sha'Carri Richardson arrested on domestic violence charges ahead of US Track and Field Championships

World 100 metres champion Sha'Carri Richardson was taken into custody on domestic violence allegations at Seattle airport just four days prior to the commencement of the US Track and Field Championships, according to a report published by USA TODAY Sports on Friday.

The 25-year-old sprinter, who claimed Olympic silver in the 100 metres at the Paris Games, allegedly engaged in a physical altercation with her male companion at the airport facility. According to a police report accessed by USA TODAY Sports, Richardson reportedly pushed the individual, causing him to fall backward into a nearby structural column following a verbal dispute.

Official records indicate that Richardson was detained during the evening hours of July 27 and subsequently released from custody the next day. The incident occurred in the lead-up to one of the most significant domestic athletics competitions of the season.

USA Track and Field addressed the situation with a brief official response, stating: "USATF is aware of these reports. We are not commenting on this matter." The governing body has declined to provide additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrest or any potential disciplinary measures.

Reuters has reached out to both the Port of Seattle Police Department and Richardson's representative seeking further comment on the developing situation, though responses were not immediately available.

The impact of the arrest became evident during the US Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where Richardson made the decision to withdraw from the 100 metres semi-finals on Friday. The American sprinter had successfully advanced through Thursday's preliminary heats before pulling out of the competition ahead of the crucial semi-final round.

Despite her withdrawal from the domestic championships, Richardson's position in international competition remains secure. The Texas native has already earned automatic qualification for the 100 metres at the upcoming world championships scheduled for September, thanks to her gold medal performance at the Budapest world championships in 2023.
