Shakhtar Donetsk 1-5 Bayern Munich: Die Roten come back to hit five past hosts

Bayern Munich overcame an early challenge to secure a 5-1 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Veltins Arena in the UEFA Champions League, thereby preserving their unbeaten record against the hosts (W2, D1).
The match began with a surprise for Bayern, as Oleksandr Zubkov delivered an impressive through ball to Kevin, who swiftly entered the penalty area and skillfully slid the ball beneath Daniel Peretz, giving Shakhtar an early lead within the first five minutes.
However, this unexpected advantage was short-lived. A threatening ball into the Shakhtar penalty area caused confusion among several players before Konrad Laimer struck decisively, sending the ball past Dmytro Riznyk to equalize.
Following this rapid response, Bayern found it challenging to capitalize on the momentum and penetrate the resolute defense of the home team. Jamal Musiala attempted a powerful shot, but it was bravely blocked by a Shakhtar defender.
As the first half drew to a close, Bayern began to assert their dominance, with Thomas Muller and Leon Goretzka both having their attempts thwarted by the Shakhtar defense, making a second goal for the visitors seem imminent.
That goal arrived just before halftime, as Musiala skillfully maneuvered into the box. Just when it appeared he would take the shot himself, he instead passed to Muller, who was positioned centrally and struck the ball into the net, giving Bayern the lead.
Despite the late goal, Shakhtar remained undeterred, with Valerii Bondar coming close to equalizing, but a Bayern defender intervened just in time to keep the ball out of the net.
Bayern believed they had secured the match with 25 minutes remaining when Musiala scored, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul in the box.
Moments later, the situation shifted when Alaa Ghram fouled Sacha Boey at the edge of the area, leading to a penalty for Michael Olise, who confidently converted the spot-kick into the top left corner, extending Bayern’s lead.
The visitors extended their lead to four goals in the closing minutes when a loose ball found its way to Musiala, who skillfully placed it past Riznyk.
Olise concluded the match with his second goal of the evening, as the winger received the ball and deftly maneuvered past multiple defenders before deceiving Riznyk and slotting the ball into an unguarded net.
Despite their determined efforts, Shakhtar has now suffered four defeats in six Champions League matches, leaving them in a challenging position to secure a play-off spot as they currently occupy 26th place.
On the other hand, Bayern will be pleased to have achieved a crucial victory on the road, maintaining their position within the top eight and aiming for automatic qualification to the knockout stage.
