Shakhtar Donetsk Shocks Lackluster Barcelona with 1-0 Victory

Barcelona's Champions League campaign took an unexpected turn as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday, failing to secure an early qualification to the knockout stages.
Danylo Sikan's expertly placed header in the 40th minute secured a well-deserved win for Shakhtar, while Barcelona's uninspired performance left them with just one shot on target.
Despite the defeat, Barcelona still leads Group H, ahead of Porto, who plays Royal Antwerp later today. With a victory, Porto could join the Catalans with nine points.
Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu expressed his disappointment, saying, "It's a tough defeat, we wanted to seal qualification, but it couldn't be. Every defeat is a warning; we have to be self-critical and see what we did wrong to correct it quickly."
The loss stung for Barcelona, who saw this match as an opportunity to advance to the next stage with two games to spare, considering their previous struggles in the group stage.
However, Shakhtar, playing their home matches in Hamburg due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, proved to be a resilient opponent from the outset.
Shakhtar's defense denied Barcelona, who had missed several chances in their October meeting. Marino Pusic's squad succeeded in shutting down the visitors, leaving them with minimal offensive impact, epitomized by just one shot on target.
Barcelona manager Xavi, who had criticized his team's performance in a narrow 1-0 league win over Real Sociedad on Saturday, found that his team failed to respond adequately to his remarks.
In the first half, Shakhtar tested Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who denied Mykola Matviienko at close range. Meanwhile, Barcelona's Ilkay Gundogan and Raphinha missed their long-range efforts, while Robert Lewandowski, returning to Germany, appeared disconnected and failed to threaten.
Shakhtar exploited Barcelona's defensive vulnerabilities a few minutes before halftime when Giorgi Gocholeishvili capitalized on Barcelona's left-back Marcos Alonso's advanced position. Gocholeishvili delivered a perfect cross to Sikan, who outjumped Andreas Christensen and headed the ball past Ter Stegen.
Xavi made changes around the hour mark, introducing speedsters Alejandro Balde and Lamine Yamal, and Pedri to inject life into the team. Although Barcelona showed improvement, they couldn't break Shakhtar's defense.
The Ukrainian champions thought they had scored a spectacular second goal through Newerton in the closing stages, but it was ruled offside.
Barcelona had seven minutes of added time to find an equalizer, but they couldn't make a breakthrough, leaving them with work to do in their next Champions League match against Porto on November 28.
