Sharon Lokedi smashes Boston Marathon Record

Kenyan star Sharon Lokedi delivered a record-shattering performance at the 2025 Boston Marathon, winning the women's race in a stunning 2:17:22. The 31-year-old smashed the previous course record — set by Ethiopia's Buzunesh Deba in 2014 — by more than two and a half minutes, marking a defining moment in Boston Marathon history.
After finishing second in 2024 to compatriot Hellen Obiri, Lokedi came back stronger, overtaking Obiri in the final kilometer to claim her second major marathon title following her 2022 New York City Marathon triumph.
"I’m always second to her and today I was like, ‘There’s no way,’" Lokedi said after the race. "I just have to put it out there and fight 'til the end and see how it goes."
All top three finishers — Lokedi, Obiri, and Ethiopia's Yalemzerf Yehualaw — ran under the previous course record time, pushing each other to historic performances.
In addition to the $150,000 prize for winning, Lokedi secured an extra $50,000 bonus for setting the fastest women's time ever recorded at the Boston Marathon.
