Sheffield United relegated from Premier League with Everton and Brentford safe

Sheffield United's relegation from the Premier League was officially confirmed on Saturday after a devastating 5-1 defeat against Newcastle United. With only three victories out of 35 matches this season, it comes as no surprise that Sheffield United will be competing in the Championship once again next season. Their relegation was sealed in a harsh manner, as they suffered a heavy loss in Newcastle.
The 2023/24 campaign has been one of the worst in the history of the Premier League for Chris Wilder's team. They have struggled throughout the season and never appeared capable of avoiding relegation.
With a meager 34 goals scored and a staggering 97 goals conceded (the second-highest in a single Premier League season), they have yet to reach the 20-point mark.
Meanwhile, Everton managed to secure their Premier League status for the upcoming season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Brentford. Despite Brentford's survival being guaranteed before the match, Everton ensured their own safety with the win.
Sheffield United commenced the current season under the leadership of Paul Heckingbottom, who automatically took over the reins. The team made the decision to part ways with last season's top scorer Iliman Ndiaye (sold to Marseille) and key midfielder Sander Berge (sold to Burnley).
The departure of these crucial players, combined with a lack of significant investment, positioned the team for a challenging season. By December, they had only managed to secure one victory. Consequently, Heckingbottom was relieved of his duties and replaced by the former manager, Wilder.
Under Wilder's guidance, the team has added two more wins to their record. However, this has not been sufficient, as they currently find themselves 10 points away from safety with only three games remaining.
"We have not met the required standard," Wilder expressed to the BBC following the defeat to Newcastle.
"The league has proven to be too formidable for us throughout the season."
Wilder emphasized that he had no plans to resign and was eager to contribute to the rebuilding process at Bramall Lane.
"I still have a year left on my contract. I hope that the fans can have faith in me," he stated.
"Both myself and my coaching staff are dedicated and passionate about setting things right."
Leicester City recently secured automatic promotion back to the Premier League after spending just one season in the Championship. This season has seen a pattern of teams moving up and down, with more potential changes on the horizon.
In the Premier League, Burnley and Luton (the other two promoted teams) are at risk of relegation alongside Sheffield United, while Nottingham Forest is also in contention.
In the Championship, last season's relegated Premier League teams (Leeds and Southampton) are in a position to make swift returns to the top flight, with Ipswich also in the running for automatic promotion.
