Shohei Ohtani undergoes shoulder surgery after playing World Series with damaged labrum

Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani underwent surgery on Tuesday to address a partial dislocation of his left shoulder sustained during the second game of the World Series against the New York Yankees, as reported by the Dodgers.

The Major League Baseball team issued a statement confirming that Ohtani had a "successful arthroscopic surgery" in Los Angeles to repair a torn labrum caused by the dislocation.

The Dodgers indicated that he is anticipated to be ready for Spring Training.

Ohtani sustained the injury while attempting to steal second base in the seventh inning of the Dodgers' 4-2 victory in game two.

The Dodgers ultimately secured the best-of-seven championship series, winning four games to one, with Ohtani continuing to participate in the games.

Although his performance in the World Series was relatively subdued, without a home run, he expressed his "honor" in being part of a championship season.

The Japanese star joined the Dodgers in December of the previous year after six challenging seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, marking his first appearance in the postseason.

While he did not pitch for the Dodgers in 2024 as he was still recovering from elbow surgery, he made history as the first player in Major League Baseball to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts remarked on the impact Ohtani has had on the team and its fan base, stating, "What Shohei's done to our ball club, the Dodger fan base domestically, globally, I just don't think you can quantify."

He added that Ohtani played through significant adversity, noting, "He was playing with one arm in the postseason. So most guys would probably tap out, but he was going to not be denied at playing and posting and being in the lineup."
