Sinner and Alcaraz through to China Open semifinals, Sabalenka rolls on

Top-seeded Jannik Sinner progressed to the semifinals of the China Open following a 6-2, 7-6 (6) triumph over Jiri Lehecka on Monday.
This victory came just two days after the World Anti-Doping Agency announced its intention to impose a one- to two-year ban on the U.S. Open champion, who had tested positive for an anabolic steroid on two occasions in March.
Despite this controversy, the 23-year-old Italian displayed remarkable focus, effectively handling the serve of the No. 37-ranked Lehecka in a commanding first set.
In the second set, the defending champion faced two set points at 4-6 during the tiebreak but managed to secure his 14th consecutive win, setting up a semifinal clash against either fifth-seeded Andrey Rubev or local favorite No. 96-ranked Bu Yunchaokete, who were scheduled to compete later on Monday.
“I am very pleased with how I managed a challenging situation,” Sinner remarked. “I believe there are still areas for improvement, so I hope tomorrow will be the day I feel more comfortable on the court.”
Third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz also advanced to the semifinals for the second consecutive year, achieving a convincing 7-5, 6-2 victory over Karen Khachanov.
The 21-year-old Spaniard exhibited his usual tenacity from the baseline, effectively wearing down the No. 27-ranked Khachanov’s service games and converting four out of twelve break points to complete the match in 96 minutes.
Alcaraz expressed, "I consistently aim to apply pressure during their service games to convey my presence on the court. If they aspire to win the service game or to overcome me, they must embrace the challenge and perform at a high level of tennis. This is the message I strive to communicate to them consistently."
This victory marked Alcaraz's 46th of the season, enabling the current champions of the French Open and Wimbledon to surpass the absent Alexander Zverev, reclaiming the second position in the ATP live rankings.
In the semifinals, Alcaraz is set to compete against Daniil Medvedev, who secured his place by defeating Italy's Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Medvedev, still in pursuit of his first title of the year, demonstrated efficiency by committing 16 fewer unforced errors than Cobolli and successfully converting four out of eight breakpoint opportunities, culminating in a solid victory that lasted 88 minutes.
Sabalenka continues her winning streak
Aryna Sabalenka's impressive performance on hard courts remains unyielding as she achieved a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ashlyn Krueger, marking her 14th consecutive win.
The three-time Grand Slam champion initiated her winning streak with a title in Cincinnati in August, followed by a championship run at the U.S. Open earlier this month. She also claimed victory at the Australian Open earlier in the year.
Ranked second, Sabalenka converted five of her seven breakpoint opportunities in a one-sided match against Krueger and will next face Madison Keys, aiming to match her career-best streak of 15 consecutive victories established in 2020-21.
Sabalenka remarked, "At this moment, I may not be playing my best tennis. However, I believe that my ability to manage my emotions and maintain composure is significantly aiding me in navigating challenging situations, allowing me to continue fighting and performing at my best."
Keys achieved a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Brazil's Beatrice Haddad Maia. Despite Haddad Maia's recent triumph at the Korea Open, she found it difficult to counter the baseline power exhibited by Keys.
Former world number one Naomi Osaka maintained her strong performance under new coach Patrick Mouratoglou, securing a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Katie Volynets. This win propels her into the round of 16, where she will face sixth-ranked Coco Gauff.
This matchup marks the first encounter between the two Grand Slam champions in over two years, with their head-to-head record currently standing at 2-2.
“It’s going to be a really cool test for me,” Osaka remarked. “She’s played really well this year. I’m excited to play the match, and I know people are excited to watch the match.”
The four-time major champion began working with Mouratoglou shortly before the China Open, following her split from Wim Fisette. This tournament marks the first occasion since May that Osaka has achieved three consecutive victories.
In a disappointing turn of events, fifth-ranked Jasmine Paolini suffered a heavy defeat, losing 6-4, 6-0 to Poland's No. 45-ranked Magda Linette.
In the Japan Open, Ugo Humbert triumphed over Tomas Machac, overcoming a mid-match surge to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, thus advancing to the final in Tokyo.
The No. 19-ranked Frenchman aims to extend his flawless 6-0 record in tour finals as he prepares to face compatriot Arthur Fils on Tuesday.
Fils, ranked No. 24, secured his place in the final by defeating sixth-seed Holger Rune of Denmark with a score of 7-6 (8), 7-6 (10) in their semifinal match.
