Sinner battles through illness to defeat Rune and advance to Australian Open quarter-finals

Defending champion and top seed Jannik Sinner triumphed over a significant medical challenge as well as his opponent, Dane Holger Rune, to advance to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the third consecutive time, securing a victory with scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Monday.

The world number one initially appeared poised to continue his smooth journey through the tournament, having concluded the first set in just 33 minutes, aided by two breaks of serve.

However, Sinner began to experience physical difficulties early in the second set, and his condition seemed to deteriorate further after he made a futile attempt to reach a return.

"Today was a strange morning; I didn't even warm up... I was aware that I would face challenges today," Sinner remarked.

"It was undoubtedly very, very tough. I knew he had played some lengthy matches prior to this one, so I focused on maintaining my mental strength. I aimed to stay engaged with my service game and approached the returning game with an open mind."

Rune capitalized on the situation, skillfully maneuvering Sinner around the court. The 13th seed seized his first break point when Sinner committed a double fault, subsequently serving to take the second set.

As Sinner, visibly shaken, wiped his face with a towel, he retreated to the locker room before the third set. He successfully defended two break points in the third game, the second of which followed an exhilarating 37-shot rally that he concluded with a crosscourt winner.

Despite the crowd's enthusiastic applause, Sinner slumped over his racket, and a few games later, he requested medical assistance and exited the court for a timeout.

Rune, aiming to become the first Danish player to reach the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park, found it challenging to leverage his physical advantage. Sinner, now moving with greater ease, broke serve to lead 5-3 before successfully serving out the third set.

Following this, Rune took a trip to the locker room, and a 20-minute delay for net anchor repairs provided him with additional recovery time, which was particularly beneficial given that he had played five, four, and five sets in his previous three matches.

Sinner capitalized on three unforced errors from Rune to break for 2-1 in the fourth set. With his serve back at full strength, Sinner appeared on track to secure his 18th consecutive victory at the tour level.

A 54th unforced error from Rune confirmed Sinner's advancement to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the tenth time, matching the Italian record established by Nicky Pietrangeli in the 1950s and 1960s.

Sinner's next opponent will be either local favorite Alex de Minaur or American rising star Alex Michelsen, against whom he has a perfect record in their combined 11 encounters.
