Sinner breezes past De Minaur to begin his ATP Finals title bid

Jannik Sinner commenced his pursuit of a first ATP Finals title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alex de Minaur on Sunday, following a tumultuous defeat for former champion Daniil Medvedev against Taylor Fritz.
The Italian player thrilled his supporters in Turin with a decisive win over Finals newcomer De Minaur, positioning himself at the top of the Ilie Nastase Group.
Having not competed since his triumph at the Shanghai Masters last month, the world number one faced only a minor setback when his serve was broken early in the first set. However, he swiftly regained his composure, winning four consecutive games to secure the opening set at 5-2 before finishing it off with his first set point.
Sinner concluded the match with a commanding performance, delivering a flawless service game and relishing the cheers of his home crowd after sealing the victory with an ace.
"This is a fantastic start for me in this event and tournament, especially considering I haven't played an official match in four weeks. I am pleased to have performed at this level today," Sinner remarked to the media.
"I experienced some initial challenges, which is to be expected, but then I found my rhythm on the court... I am extremely happy."
Sinner, who was the runner-up to Novak Djokovic in last year's final, currently leads the world rankings after an impressive season that included his first Grand Slam titles at the Australian and US Opens, along with five additional ATP titles.
Nevertheless, he has faced scrutiny due to two positive tests for traces of the steroid clostebol in March. Initially exonerated by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed at the end of September, seeking a potential ban of up to two years.
Medvedev, the 2020 champion and a finalist the following year, shares the Ilie Nastase Group with Sinner but displayed visible frustration during his 6-4, 6-3 defeat to American Fritz.
Medvedev exhibited frustration by destroying his racket after losing the first set, and the situation deteriorated further when Fritz broke his serve, establishing a 4-2 advantage in the second set.
As a consequence of throwing his racket at a courtside microphone, Medvedev was penalized with a point deduction. During the seventh game of the second set, he was seen holding a new racket by its head while awaiting Fritz's serve.
Following the match, Medvedev, who faced jeers from the audience for his conduct, responded affirmatively when asked if he was looking forward to the conclusion of the season.
"I am weary of battling against circumstances beyond my control," he expressed to the media.
"I will assess how things progress. Today, I indeed had my opportunities. I will have more chances in upcoming matches. If it does not pan out, I will take a vacation. I am content."
Carlos Alcaraz is set to commence his pursuit of a first Finals title in the John Newcombe Group on Monday, facing Casper Ruud, while Alexander Zverev will compete against Andrey Rublev.
The top two players from each of the tournament's two groups will advance to the semi-finals.
