Sinner Wins Shanghai Masters, Denies Djokovic 100th Career Title

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, 23, claimed victory over 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, 37, in a gripping Shanghai Masters final on Sunday. Sinner's 7-6(4), 6-3 win denied Djokovic his highly anticipated 100th career singles title.

The Italian broke Djokovic in the pivotal fourth game of the second set, wrapping up the match in one hour and 37 minutes.

"He was simply too good today, too strong, too fast," Djokovic said afterward, acknowledging Sinner's outstanding performance.

Sinner, on his part, praised Djokovic as a "legend" who consistently plays "incredible tennis year after year." In a lighthearted moment, he quipped, "There are legends everywhere; I just try to keep up a little bit," referencing Roger Federer, who was in the crowd.

The first set saw both players holding serve with neither able to break the other. Sinner took control in the tiebreak, securing a crucial break on the first point and quickly jumping to a 5-1 lead. Despite Djokovic's attempt to recover, Sinner capitalized on his second set point to take the opener.

In the second set, Sinner gained the upper hand in the fourth game, breaking Djokovic’s serve after a perfectly executed forehand down the line. From there, he kept his cool, closing the match with a powerful ace to secure the title.

This victory adds another accolade to Sinner's impressive season, which includes two Grand Slam titles and his firm hold on the No. 1 ranking since June.

However, the year hasn’t been without its challenges. Sinner faced controversy earlier in 2024 after testing positive for a banned steroid twice in March. He attributed the positive tests to an unintentional mistake by his physiotherapist, who used a spray containing the substance during a treatment. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted his explanation, clearing him of any wrongdoing, but the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced last month that it plans to appeal the ruling, potentially seeking a two-year suspension.

This news surfaced as Sinner was competing in the China Open, where he finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz, who was also in the stands for Sunday's final.

Reflecting on his challenging year, Sinner said, "This year has been extremely difficult for me... It’s hard to keep smiling sometimes, but I try to stay focused on my matches and training."

Djokovic graciously accepted the outcome, noting that Sinner "played the crucial points better" and deserved the win. Though he was denied his 100th title, the Serbian said it wasn’t a "life-or-death goal," and he remains determined to reach the milestone.

Djokovic, now the last man standing from tennis' golden generation following Rafael Nadal's recent retirement announcement, said he is still motivated to compete at the highest level. "I played well, and I know I can still go toe-to-toe with the best. As long as I feel that way, I will keep competing."

The Shanghai Masters may have slipped away, but Djokovic remains focused on the road ahead while Sinner continues to shine in his breakout year.
