Sir Alex Ferguson to to leave Man Utd ambassador role amid cost-cutting efforts

Sir Alex Ferguson is set to step down from his £2 million-a-year ambassador role at Manchester United at the end of the season, as part of the club's ongoing cost-cutting measures. The legendary former manager, now 82, who led United to 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League victories during his near 27-year tenure, will leave his global ambassador position, according to reports.

The decision was made amicably, with Ferguson expected to continue serving as a non-executive director on the football club's board, maintaining his long-standing connection with the club. Since retiring in 2013, Ferguson has been a regular figure at United matches and remained closely linked with the club.

This move comes amid broader financial restructuring at Manchester United, spearheaded by INEOS, following Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a minority stake in the club. United posted a fifth consecutive year of losses, recording £113.2 million ($148 million) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. Despite the financial losses, the club assured that they are still compliant with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability regulations.

As part of these cost-saving efforts, United initiated a redundancy program that resulted in approximately 250 job cuts. These changes come as the club struggles both financially and on the pitch, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League. Manager Erik ten Hag is under increasing pressure following a poor start to the season, with the upcoming game against Brentford seen as crucial.

Ferguson’s departure from the ambassador role marks the end of a significant chapter for the club, as they continue to navigate through financial difficulties while aiming to improve performance on the field.
