6 Stand-Out Moments from the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics delivered drama, dominance, heartbreak and controversy. Here are six unforgettable moments that defined two gripping weeks in northern Italy.

1. Johannes Klaebo’s Historic Six-Gold Sweep

If there was one athlete who defined the 2026 Winter Olympics, it was Johannes Klaebo. Six races. Six gold medals.

Competing in Tesero, the Norwegian cross-country skier completed an unprecedented clean sweep, becoming the first athlete in Olympic history to win all six cross-country skiing events at a single Games. His performance elevated his career tally to 11 Olympic golds.

In doing so, Klaebo joined rare company. Only Eric Heiden (five golds at Lake Placid 1980) and Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (four golds in Salt Lake City 2002) had previously won all their events at one Winter Olympics. Across both Summer and Winter Games, only Michael Phelps has more Olympic gold medals than Klaebo.

2. Alysa Liu ends a 24-year wait for USA

Alysa Liu delivered one of the most emotional victories of the Games, ending the United States’ 24-year drought in women’s individual figure skating. Her free skate, packed with seven triples, sealed gold in Milan and capped an extraordinary comeback arc.

After finishing sixth at Beijing 2022 as a teenager, Liu stepped away from the sport for two years before returning to claim a world title and now Olympic glory. She also helped secure team gold for the United States, confirming her role as the face of American figure skating’s new era.

3. Swiss Alpine Skiing dominates the slopes

While individual brilliance stood out, no team controlled a discipline quite like Switzerland’s men in alpine skiing. Led by Franjo von Allmen, the Swiss squad captured four of the five available gold medals and eight of the 15 total medals in alpine events.

Von Allmen’s triple gold, downhill, super-G and team combined alongside Tanguy Nef, placed him alongside legends Toni Sailer and Jean-Claude Killy as just the third man to win three alpine golds at a single Winter Olympics. At just 24, Von Allmen may be at the beginning of a generational run.

4. Lindsey Vonn’s Painful Farewell

Not all headlines were triumphant. Lindsey Vonn returned to Olympic competition at 41 in what many expected to be a farewell appearance. Instead, her downhill race ended seconds after it began in a heavy crash that left her with a broken leg.

The setback was compounded by the fact she had suffered a ruptured ACL just a week before the Games. Multiple surgeries followed in Italy before she returned to the United States for further treatment.

For one of the most recognisable figures in winter sport, Milano Cortina may mark the final chapter of a career defined by resilience as much as medals.

5. Ilia Malinin’s Shock Collapse

Ilia Malinin arrived in Milan as the overwhelming favourite for men’s figure skating gold. Nicknamed the “Quad God,” the two-time world champion carried a five-point lead into the free skate after a dominant short programme. What followed stunned the arena.

Two falls derailed his routine and dropped him to eighth place in one of the Games’ most dramatic reversals. Malinin later admitted the failure was “definitely mental,” a rare moment of vulnerability from an athlete who had been unbeaten for more than two years. It was a reminder that Olympic pressure spares no one.

6. Vladyslav Heraskevych and the Political Flashpoint

Sport and politics collided when Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych was disqualified for wearing a helmet featuring images of Ukrainian athletes killed since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The decision, enforced under athlete expression rules by the International Olympic Committee, sparked backlash from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The episode became one of the most debated moments of the Games, raising fresh questions about neutrality, athlete expression and the boundaries of protest in Olympic competition.

A Winter Games of Extremes

Milano Cortina 2026 delivered everything the Olympics promise, historic dominance, emotional comebacks, crushing disappointment and global controversy.

From Klaebo’s perfection to Liu’s redemption, from Swiss precision to Vonn’s heartbreak, these Games will be remembered not only for medals but for moments that transcended the podium. And that is why, long after the snow melts in northern Italy, these six stories will endure.
