Slovakia 1-1 Romania: Romania, Slovakia advance to the last 16 following thrilling draw

Romania and Slovakia ended their final Group E match at the 2024 UEFA European Championship in a 1-1 draw, securing both teams a spot in the round of 16 despite challenging weather conditions at the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt.

In the first half, both teams took risks despite knowing that a draw would be enough to progress.

Slovakia posed a threat from set-pieces early on, with Juraj Kucka missing a good opportunity with a free header that was saved by Florin Nita.

Lukas Haraslin's free-kick caused chaos in the box, leading to Kucka's cross and the opening goal by Ondrej Duda.

Duda's header found the back of the net, making him the first Slovak player to score in two different European Championships.

Romania quickly responded by equalizing from the penalty spot after a VAR review confirmed David Hancko's foul on Ianis Hagi inside the box. Razvan Marin converted the penalty with precision, leveling the score at halftime.

Despite both teams pushing for a winner in the second half, the match ended in a draw.

Romania came close to completing a comeback, but Marin's shot was saved by Dubravka, and Dragus narrowly missed the target.

Slovakia also had their chances, with Strelec testing Nita and Haraslín's shot going wide.

The Falcons may feel a tinge of disappointment for not securing a victory despite leading in their fifth consecutive match.

However, their primary objective of advancing to the knockout stage has been achieved, which remains their ultimate goal.

Romania will be thrilled to have progressed from the group stage in the Euros for the first time since 2000.
