Slovan Bratislava 0-4 Manchester City: Cityzens dominate hosts to secure their first Champions League win of the campaign

Manchester City commenced their campaign in the inaugural UEFA Champions League league phase with a commanding 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava, thereby extending their club record unbeaten streak in away matches in the UCL to 12 games.

Following a disappointing 5-1 loss to Celtic on the first matchday, Manchester City's arrival in Bratislava was likely a daunting prospect for Slovan.

From the outset, Slovan found themselves under pressure, conceding a goal within the first 10 minutes. Ilkay Gündogan capitalized on a blocked shot from Savinho, swiftly converting from the edge of the penalty area, marking his first goal since rejoining City.

The situation worsened for the Slovakian side shortly thereafter, as City increased their lead. Jeremy Doku was instrumental, penetrating the box and assisting Phil Foden, who expertly curled the ball into the far corner of the net.

Following their successful collaboration for the second goal, both players came close to scoring again, hitting the woodwork. Doku cut in from the right and delivered a stunning left-footed shot that struck the intersection of the post and crossbar, while Foden's follow-up was too powerful for Dominik Takac, who fortuitously deflected it onto the post.

At this juncture, it was evident that the Slovan goal was under significant threat, a precarious situation with Erling Haaland lurking nearby.

The Norwegian striker eventually found the net, and the goal was executed with remarkable simplicity. Rico Lewis delivered a precise pass, allowing Haaland to round Takac and slot the ball into an unguarded net.

Haaland was substituted shortly thereafter, as manager Pep Guardiola began to shift his focus towards their upcoming match in pursuit of a fifth consecutive Premier League title.

James McAtee was substituted in for the imposing Norwegian, and the City academy product quickly justified his manager's confidence by scoring City's fourth goal of the evening. He skillfully controlled Foden's precise pass and struck decisively at the near post.

By the time the fourth goal was scored, it appeared that City had eased off their intensity; however, with the task effectively accomplished, Guardiola is likely to view it as a successful outing.

On the other hand, Slovan has encountered the stark realities of the UEFA Champions League, suffering consecutive defeats by a four-goal margin. Nevertheless, they will be acutely aware that their overall campaign will not hinge solely on matches against the 2022/23 Champions League winners.
