Smith Rowe rescues Fulham as Man Utd settle for 1-1 Premier League draw

Fulham secured a valuable 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Craven Cottage on Sunday, with substitute Emile Smith Rowe delivering an instant impact by equalizing with his first touch to cancel out an own goal, while Bruno Fernandes endured penalty heartbreak in a frustrating afternoon for the visitors. The result left both teams still searching for their first victory of the new Premier League campaign.

Smith Rowe's dramatic intervention came just 93 seconds after entering the fray, demonstrating the clinical finishing that has made him such a valuable addition to Marco Silva's squad. The midfielder's perfectly timed run and composed finish provided Fulham with their first point against Manchester United in nine home encounters, breaking a lengthy drought against their illustrious opponents.

"We are very competitive in training, we all want to score goals and contribute to the team. We know when we come off the bench we have to work hard and try and score," Smith Rowe told Sky Sports after his match-saving contribution.

The draw elevated Fulham to 13th position with two points from their opening fixtures, while Ruben Amorim's Manchester United side languishes in 16th place with just a solitary point from their first two Premier League matches, highlighting the challenging start to the Portuguese manager's tenure at Old Trafford.

United signaled their attacking intentions from the opening whistle as Matheus Cunha threatened to make an immediate impact with two early attempts within the first two minutes. The Brazilian's opening effort, a thunderous long-range strike, sailed harmlessly over the crossbar, but his second attempt proved far more dangerous, striking the post with goalkeeper Bernd Leno well beaten.

Cunha's electric start continued when he displayed remarkable technique to control a long ball from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, plucking the ball from the sky inside the penalty area. The crowd held its collective breath as the talented forward prepared to shoot, but Leno produced an excellent save to deny what appeared to be a certain goal.

Fulham nearly gifted their opponents the opening goal through a moment of defensive recklessness when Calvin Bassey engaged in an unnecessary tussle with Mason Mount during a set-piece situation. The defender's decision to grapple with and subsequently throw the midfielder to the ground prompted referee Chris Kavanagh to consult the VAR screen before announcing his decision to award a penalty over the stadium's public address system.

However, United's hopes of capitalizing on this golden opportunity were dashed when captain Fernandes, typically reliable from twelve yards, sent his spot-kick sailing high over the crossbar. The Portuguese playmaker's frustration was evident, particularly after an accidental collision with the referee disrupted his pre-penalty routine, and Craven Cottage erupted in celebration at the miss.

"Everyone has their own routine. I missed the penalty because I kicked the ball very badly," Fernandes admitted after the match. "We are very disappointed. Obviously, we were into the game. We should have controlled it better after our goal and made them run. We cannot be satisfied with one point. We came here to win the game."

United finally broke the deadlock in the second half through a fortuitous own goal that originated from a corner situation. Leny Yoro rose to meet Bryan Mbeumo's delivery, and his header deflected off Rodrigo Muniz's back before finding its way into the net, providing the visitors with their first goal of the new season.

The advantage proved short-lived as Silva's tactical substitution paid immediate dividends. Smith Rowe's introduction transformed Fulham's attacking threat, and the midfielder demonstrated exceptional awareness by drifting into the six-yard box to convert Alex Iwobi's cross with his first involvement.

"It was really quick, I know when Alex gets the ball, I know his trademark cross and I have to be there to finish," Smith Rowe explained, highlighting the understanding that has developed between the teammates.

The equalizer energized Fulham and they dominated the closing stages, pressing high up the pitch to win possession and occasionally creating openings in United's defense, though they were unable to test Bayindir significantly. United's best chance to snatch victory came in the 87th minute when substitute Harry Maguire directed a header from a corner wide of the target, leaving both teams to settle for a share of the spoils.
