Son Heung-min breaks global jersey sales record just days after joining LAFC

Son Heung-min’s move to Los Angeles FC has already rewritten the record books and not on the pitch. The South Korean star’s jersey has become the best-selling in the world across all sports, surpassing sales for global icons like Lionel Messi, David Beckham, LeBron James and Stephen Curry.

LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington confirmed the scale of the frenzy: “This is now the second week where we’re not just talking about the highest-selling football jersey in MLS. It’s the highest-selling jersey of any sport in the world right now. From the day he signed until now, Son has sold more jerseys than any athlete anywhere.”

The surge is based on real-time sales data following the official announcement of his signing. For sports marketing analysts, the numbers underline Son’s appeal far beyond football, placing him firmly in the mainstream of U.S. sports culture.

“What LAFC is doing with Son is more than just a football transfer, it’s a cultural crossover,” said sports marketing consultant Rafael Vega. “You’re seeing an athlete who is a national hero in Korea now become a household name in Los Angeles.”

That crossover is already in motion. The Los Angeles Dodgers have confirmed that Son will throw the ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium on August 27, when they take on the San Diego Padres. LAFC is actively encouraging fans to attend the MLB game as part of his welcome to the city’s sporting scene.

Son made his MLS debut against the Chicago Fire last weekend and is expected to feature again when LAFC faces the New England Revolution on Saturday.
