South Africa defeat West Indies to reach T20 World Cup semi-finals

On Sunday, South Africa secured a narrow victory over the West Indies by three wickets in a rain-affected Super Eights match. This win propelled South Africa into the T20 World Cup semi-finals and eliminated the hosts from the tournament.

In pursuit of a revised target of 123 runs off 17 overs, South Africa faced a few hiccups and stumbled to 110-7. Roston Chase of the West Indies took three crucial wickets, adding pressure to the South African side. However, South Africa managed to reach their target when Marco Jansen struck a six off the first ball of the final over.

Tabraiz Shamsi was named the Man of the Match for his exceptional performance, taking three wickets for 27 runs. South Africa won the toss and restricted the West Indies to a total of 135-8 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

Roston Chase played a vital role for the West Indies, scoring the highest with 52 runs. He formed a crucial partnership of 81 runs for the third wicket with Kyle Mayers, who contributed 35 runs off 34 balls. Chase also made an impact with his off-spin bowling, taking three wickets for just 12 runs.

Marco Jansen's unbeaten 21 runs guided South Africa to victory, with the final six off Obed McCoy's delivery sealing the win at 124-7.

Tabraiz Shamsi expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating, "The last time I played here, I conceded 50 runs and there was a lot of criticism. I am glad that I could come back and fulfill my role. Credit also goes to the bowlers who performed before me, as they set up the game beautifully."

Shamsi, brought in as a replacement for Ottneil Baartman, received excellent support from fellow slow bowlers Keshav Maharaj (1-24) and captain Aiden Markram (1-28).

Roston Chase was given a lifeline when he was dropped on 11 by Anrich Nortje, and he made the most of it by hitting two sixes and three fours. His partnership with Kyle Mayers helped the West Indies recover after a shaky start, with the team falling to 5-2 in the second over.

Once Mayers was dismissed by Shamsi, South Africa managed to take regular wickets, restricting the West Indies. At 117-6, Anrich Nortje redeemed himself by running out the dangerous Andre Russell.

Markram, the victorious captain, confessed to feeling anxious during the intense pursuit.

"We are certainly relieved to have secured a spot in the semi-finals, but we won't allow ourselves to be complacent. We had hoped for a more dominant performance," he acknowledged.

"Perhaps we attempted to secure victory too quickly, but that has been the recurring theme throughout the tournament."

"We often find ourselves in challenging situations and have to fight hard to come out on top."

South Africa now joins England as the qualifying teams for the semi-finals from Super Eight Group 2.
