South Africa’s Henk Lategan Wins Dakar Rally Prologue

South Africa’s Henk Lategan emerged victorious in the prologue of the 47th Dakar Rally, kicking off the sixth edition of the event in Saudi Arabia. Lategan, driving a Toyota Hilux, completed the 29km run in Bisha just a second ahead of Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom, with Qatar’s five-time Dakar champion Nasser al-Attiyah rounding out the top three.

Prologue Insights

The prologue, though not counting towards the overall standings, allows the top 10 finishers to select their starting positions for the first competitive stage. This strategic advantage sets the tone for the grueling 12-stage, 8,000km rally.

Key highlights from the prologue include:

  • France's Sebastien Loeb, a nine-time world rally champion, finished seventh as he pursues his first Dakar title in nine attempts.
  • Spain’s Carlos Sainz, last year’s oldest winner at 61, struggled, finishing 25th.
  • Australian Daniel Sanders led the motorbikes category on his KTM, followed by Botswana’s Ross Branch and Spain’s Edgar Canet.

A Challenging Route

The rally features a colorful caravan of 434 competitors from 72 countries, racing across cars, bikes, quads, and trucks. The race will conclude on January 17 in Shubaytah, near the UAE border.

This year’s route includes:

  • A demanding second 48-hour stage in the Empty Quarter, known for its vast dunes.
  • A varied course through key locations like Alula, Hail, Riyadh, and Shubaytah.

Historical Context

Though named after Dakar, the rally last concluded in the Senegalese capital in 2007. Security concerns in Mauritania shifted the event to South America in 2009, and since 2020, Saudi Arabia has been the rally’s home.

Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the Dakar Rally reflects its broader investment in becoming a global sports hub, part of efforts to diversify its oil-dependent economy.
