Southampton 0-1 West Ham: Bowen's goal enough for Hammers to see off struggling Saints

Ivan Jurić’s tenure as the manager of Southampton commenced with a disappointing defeat, as a lone goal from Jarrod Bowen resulted in a loss at St Mary’s Stadium, further jeopardizing their aspirations of becoming only the fifth Premier League team to avoid relegation after being at the bottom on Christmas Day.

West Ham's Carlos Soler struck the crossbar early in the match, but it was Paul Onuachu who had the first significant opportunity of the Jurić era, heading narrowly off target.

Just before the 20-minute mark, another promising chance was squandered when Mateus Fernandes' header, following a cross from Adam Armstrong, was expertly saved by Łukasz Fabiański.

Despite their renewed determination, Southampton continued to press forward, yet Fabiański delivered an exceptional fingertip save to deny another Onuachu header aimed at the top-left corner.

Unfortunately for West Ham, Fabiański's afternoon was abruptly halted due to a serious head injury sustained during an aerial challenge with Nathan Wood. A 10-minute medical delay ensued, culminating in the Polish goalkeeper being taken off on a stretcher.

His substitute, Alphonse Areola, had little to contend with during the extended stoppage time, although Onuachu managed to direct a header directly at him just before halftime.

In the early moments of the second half, West Ham's Guido Rodríguez received a straight red card for a two-footed tackle on Kyle Walker-Peters as he advanced. However, a VAR review determined that Rodríguez's feet remained on the ground, resulting in the red card being rescinded.

Southampton's frustration soon turned to despair when West Ham took the lead in the 60th minute. Taylor Harwood-Bellis struggled to clear the ball from a corner, leading to a series of passes that allowed Tomáš Souček to deliver a ball into the penalty area.

Right in front of Aaron Ramsdale, Niclas Füllkrug deftly flicked the ball to Bowen, who converted with a straightforward close-range shot.

West Ham needed to maintain a solid defensive performance to ensure that Bowen's goal marked his fourth match-winning contribution among the six he has scored this season.

However, their goal was under significant threat as Southampton found renewed energy. Walker-Peters set up Fernandes, who narrowly missed with a low shot that went just inches wide. Moments later, Crysencio Summerville surged down the opposite end and came close to scoring from a tight angle after cutting inside onto his right foot.

Despite a late flurry of missed opportunities for West Ham, Southampton was unable to direct any shots on target. With their defense remaining steadfast and organized in the closing minutes, West Ham successfully secured only their second victory in eight away matches.

The Hammers celebrated their achievement with enthusiasm, but the situation could worsen for Southampton, as another disappointing day could leave them facing the prospect of being 11 points adrift of safety by the final weekend of 2024, depending on results elsewhere.
