Southampton 1-5 Chelsea: Five-star Blues thrash 10-man Saints to reclaim second spot

Chelsea maintained their remarkable away form in the Premier League (W5, D1, L1) by decisively defeating 10-man Southampton 5-1, narrowing the gap to league leaders Liverpool to seven points.
The match commenced with a pre-game light display at St Mary’s, after which a significantly altered Chelsea lineup showcased their prowess during an engaging first half.
The visitors quickly took the lead in the seventh minute, as Axel Disasi’s header redirected Enzo Fernandez’s corner into the net.
Despite having never lost a Premier League match after scoring first, Chelsea found themselves equalized just four minutes later when Kyle Walker-Peters outmaneuvered Fernandez and assisted Joe Aribo for an easy goal.
Southampton's season has been marred by defensive errors, and another misstep occurred here when Joe Lumley’s careless turnover allowed Noni Madueke to set up Chelsea’s leading scorer, Christopher Nkunku, who calmly finished into an unguarded net—marking the Saints' ninth league blunder resulting in a goal this season.
Chelsea continued to apply pressure, with Cole Palmer striking the post and Tosin Adarabioyo hitting the bar before Madueke scored their third goal, skillfully maneuvering into the box to place a shot into the far corner.
The situation worsened for Southampton before halftime, as captain Jack Stephens received a red card for the second time this season after pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair.
The second half began briskly, with Joao Felix inexplicably heading wide from Palmer’s precise cross, shortly before Tosin struck a corner delivery against the post, and Madueke was thwarted by a last-minute challenge.
The hosts had a fleeting opportunity to regain their footing when Filip Jorgensen denied Mateus Fernandes, but they soon found themselves under pressure again as Madueke forced another save from Lumley.
Throughout the majority of the match, Southampton maintained a position as the clear second-best team. However, their determination in the second half was ultimately undermined in the 77th minute, primarily due to Nkunku's unexpected decision to pass rather than shoot when presented with a goal-scoring opportunity, allowing Palmer to score with a simple tap-in.
Chelsea concluded a remarkable evening by adding a fifth goal, as Jadon Sancho, remaining onside, struck his first goal for the club with great force.
This victory propels Chelsea into sole possession of second place, momentarily distancing them from Arsenal and intensifying speculation regarding their potential involvement in the title race.
Conversely, it is noteworthy that no team has ever survived a Premier League season after accumulating only five points at this juncture, a concerning statistic for Russell Martin’s Southampton, who currently languish at the bottom of the league with merely one victory to their credit.
