Southampton sack Ivan Juric after Premier League Relegation

Southampton have officially parted ways with head coach Ivan Juric after the club’s dismal Premier League campaign ended in record-breaking relegation, the earliest in league history. The decision was announced on Monday, less than 24 hours after the Saints were beaten 3-1 by Tottenham Hotspur, a result that sealed their fate with seven matches left to play.

Relegation Confirmed: Record-Breaking Collapse

With 25 defeats in 31 matches, Southampton have endured one of the worst seasons in Premier League history. Their relegation, confirmed in early April, beats the previous record held by Derby County (2008) and Huddersfield Town (2019), both of whom went down with six games remaining.

Club Statement on Juric’s Departure

“Ivan came to Southampton at a tough time and was tasked with trying to improve a squad in a difficult situation,” the club said in an official statement.
Unfortunately, we haven’t seen performances progress the way we had hoped… but we would like to thank Ivan and his staff for their honesty and hard work.”

Juric, who replaced Russell Martin in December, managed just one league victory, a 1-0 win over Ipswich Town and failed to spark a turnaround in the club’s fortunes. The Croatian coach departs with only 5 points from a possible 51 under his tenure.

New Interim Setup: Rusk & Lallana Take Over

The Saints have appointed Simon Rusk as interim manager for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. He will be supported by former club captain Adam Lallana, who returns to the dugout in a coaching capacity, offering leadership and familiarity during a transitional phase.

Who could be next? Rohl and Rosenior in the frame

Several names have already been linked with the full-time job at St Mary’s Stadium:

  • Danny Rohl, the current Sheffield Wednesday boss and former Southampton assistant, is reportedly a leading candidate.
  • Liam Rosenior, having impressed at Strasbourg in Ligue 1, is also being monitored by the Saints board.

Rohl was previously shortlisted before Juric’s appointment and could be seen as a coach capable of restoring Southampton’s pressing identity and promoting youth, both key to their rebuild in the EFL Championship.

What’s Next for Southampton?

Despite relegation, Southampton’s focus now turns to rebuilding for a promotion push in the Championship. The club emphasized its desire to “restore a sense of pride” in the team and its supporters.

“We remain incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our fans… Despite the challenges that relegation will bring, our goal is to restore a sense of pride for them in their team and club once again.”

The Saints are next in action on Saturday at home against Aston Villa, one of the Premier League’s most in-form teams. While survival is no longer on the cards, pride and preparation for next season will be on the line.
