Spain captain David Ferrer defends selection following Rafael Nadal's Davis Cup defeat

Spain's Davis Cup captain, David Ferrer, expressed no regrets regarding his decision to include Rafael Nadal in their quarter-final singles match against the Netherlands on Tuesday, despite the 22-time Grand Slam champion concluding his career with a defeat.
Nadal lost to Botic van de Zandschulp with a score of 6-4, 6-4, but world number three Carlos Alcaraz managed to equalize the tie by defeating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(0), 6-3.
Unfortunately, Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers were unable to secure victory in the crucial doubles match, falling to Wesley Koolhof and Van de Zandschulp.
In a press conference held early Wednesday in Malaga, Ferrer reflected on the emotional weight of what he described as a "strange" day. He acknowledged the difficulty of the decision to field Nadal, noting that both Nadal and Roberto Bautista were closely matched, but he opted for Nadal due to his consistent improvement in training.
"He is leaving behind something truly special... he has made a significant impact. It is rare to find someone of such greatness and humility," Ferrer remarked. "I hope he departs from the sport feeling happy, proud, and at peace."
Nadal had previously announced his retirement following the Davis Cup Finals, prompting an emotional response from Alcaraz, who referred to Nadal as both an inspiration and a mentor.
"Rafa has shown me the passion required to truly embrace tennis," Alcaraz stated during the press conference. "I feel fortunate to have had him in my life. I wish I had joined the circuit sooner.
I carry with me unforgettable memories, and it is thanks to him that I aspired to become a tennis player. If, by the end of my career, I achieve even half of what he has accomplished, I will be more than satisfied."
