Spain defeat Morocco to book spot in Olympic Games final

Spain's promising summer may culminate in a collection of medals by Friday evening, following a 2-1 comeback victory against Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2024 Olympic men's football tournament, which has secured their place in the gold medal match.
In a vibrant setting at Marseille's Stade Vélodrome, both teams struggled to establish control during the initial 15 minutes, leading to fourth official Glenn Nyberg stepping in to replace referee Ilgiz Tantashev, who sustained an injury due to a collision with Marc Pubill.
The first goalkeeper to face a challenge was Morocco's Munir Mohamedi, who had to stretch to his limits to deny a 25-yard shot from Fermín López that was aimed at the bottom corner.
However, just as Spain began to assert their dominance, they found themselves trailing. In an attempt to clear the ball from his own area, Pablo Barrios was outpaced by Amir Richardson, resulting in Barrios inadvertently catching Richardson on the back of the leg. Following a review by Nyberg at the monitor, a penalty kick was awarded to Morocco.
Soufiane Rahimi successfully converted a penalty, ensuring he has scored in every match of this tournament thus far, thereby solidifying his position as the leading scorer. Spain had chances to equalize during the 12 minutes of stoppage time in the first half; however, Aimar Oroz's shot was saved, and Abel Ruiz's attempt struck the post.
Following the interval, both teams resorted to long-range efforts, with Barrios testing the reflexes of Mohamedi, while Ilias Akhomach sent a shot soaring over the crossbar at the opposite end.
However, 20 minutes into the second half, Lopez took advantage of a careless touch from a Moroccan player in the penalty area, composed himself, and directed the ball into the bottom corner, leveling the score and increasing his tournament tally to four goals.
The Atlas Lions initially reacted positively to the setback, with Richardson and Eliesse Ben Seghir posing threats from distance. Yet, just five minutes before the final whistle, Spain capitalized on their opportunity to secure victory.
A brilliant play on the right flank by Lopez set up the advancing Juanlu Sanchez, who struck the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net, propelling La Roja into the gold medal match at the Parc des Princes on Friday, where they will face either France or Egypt.
The team that loses the other semi-final will compete against Morocco in the bronze medal match in Nantes. Nevertheless, the Atlas Lions can take pride in their spirited performance, having never previously achieved a better finish than eighth in their seven prior Olympic appearances.
