Spain ease into Olympic semi-finals after Fermin Lopez brace downs Japan

The match began with intense action as both teams sought to assert their control, but it was Spain who took the lead after 10 minutes, rebounding from their previous defeat against Egypt.

Lopez, representing Barcelona, seized a loose ball from 25 yards out, skillfully turned, and unleashed a powerful shot that surpassed the efforts of goalkeeper Leo Kokubo, despite his attempt to block it.

Although Spain held the advantage, they seemed to ease off, nearly conceding a goal just before halftime.

Japan's Mao Hosoya found himself in a challenging position with his back to the goal, yet he managed to pivot and fired a shot that beat the outstretched Arnau Tenas. However, a VAR review determined that his standing foot was marginally offside at the moment the ball was played to him.

Hosoya seemed to be out of luck as he came close once more just before halftime; however, his header at the back post struck the inside of the post and rebounded to safety.

This fortunate escape, coupled with the halftime break, allowed Spain to regroup, and Alex Baena had a significant opportunity to extend the lead to 2-0 when he found space in the penalty area, but he misfired, sending his shot well off target.

Despite Japan's vigorous efforts, they were unable to create any clear scoring opportunities and were dealt a blow by another remarkable goal from Lopez with 15 minutes remaining.

Sergio Gomez located him at the edge of the box following a corner, and the Barcelona forward expertly controlled the ball with his chest before delivering a spectacular volley past Kokubo.

Although the third goal felt unjust for Japan, it materialized in the closing minutes when Abel Ruiz capitalized on a loose ball in the box, striking it into the net to secure a 3-0 lead.

This defeat was disappointing for Japan, as they arguably performed better during certain phases of the match and witnessed Kota Takai's late header strike the crossbar.

Nevertheless, their pursuit of an Olympic medal continues, while Spain prepares to face Morocco, aiming to add another international title to their European Championship triumph earlier this summer.
